6:15 PM still 121 degrees at Badwater

I’ve got a cool picture of my motorcycle leaning against the sign at Badwater. Froze my ass off on the way home. Gets cold in the desert on winter nights.

Yeah, nice breeze a blowin’.

It was so hot, a dog was chasing a cat and they were both walking.

Oh my. Furnace Creek Ranch is my favorite place on earth, my late husband and I went there all the time. The oasis garden in the moonlight. Lounging by the pool at night while fires burned in the big outdoor fireplaces. Watching the stars from the top floor lounge. The food in the dining room is fantastic as well.

And we made out with our shirts off in Badwater ( hubby wanted to do it but I chickened out.) …we walked out to the actual low point which is a bit away from the road.

that sounds wonderful!

I recently met someone who told the Death Valley is the most beautiful place on earth & I heard this spring the wildflowers were spectacular.

I’m really wanting to visit, maybe next Spring.

On another point,

Will the 134 degree F maximum there in 1913 (the current world record) ever be exceeded?

I believe the highest they had since then is 129 F (multiple times)

Supposed to get down to 72F in Badwater Saturday night.

Coats and jackets will be required.

And pants.

Ever? Sure. The sun will eventually become a red giant, after all, and consume the inner planets, including Earth.

Anytime soon? Sure. Global climate change.

I know that records eventually fall but this is a record that has been around for over 100 years (Not taking in account the discredited Libyan 136 F)

I am surprised that it has lasted so long and was just pondering how long before it is broken. (10 years, 25 years, 50 years)?

There are not many weather records such as that one that have lasted for 100+ years. Especially with more weather stations around monitoring and recording data.

Even worldwide, there is only one additional 130+ high (131 F in Tunisia)

That being said, even the person recording the 134 F temperature on that day was a little suspicious of the high as he included a note that even he thought it was abnormally high.

However, when they checked and recertified the thermometer, the temperature recorded was valid.

Anyways, I am still amazed that this record high has stood as being the record for this long of a time

I am so stealing that. Thanks!

PS: I love Death Valley. Wish I was there to enjoy the heat. With an air-conditioned car and a ton of cold water.

Looks like NOAA is trying to cook the books by placing a thermometer close to a building and asphalt roadway at Badwater. They are dying to get a new record.

They’ll have to put an asterisk next to it.

New record for the date (128 degrees) today at Badwater. Same in store for tomorrow, Tuesday.

It’s hotter than a snakes ass in a wheel rut.

–Robin Williams channeling Walter Cronkite (“Good Morning, Vietnam”)

It was only 110 today in Baker, home of the world’s tallest thermometer. The record it commemorates remains intact.

You should see the size of the butt that’s supposed to go into!

Is that in Fahrenheit or Celsius? I’m guessing •F?

I live in the UK, and today feels like our first good day, as its been miserable recently! Possibly going to get 25 degrees C, which is better than the miserable 15 degrees C that we have recently had!

What that equates to in degrees F, I really dont know.

I’m guessing that 121 F must be in excess of 45 C… Which is unbearable for me!

128 F = 53.3 C

32 F = 0 C
50 F = 10 C
68 F = 20 C
86 F = 30 C
104 F = 40 C
122 F = 50 C

Starting at “Freezing”, adding 10 degrees to C means you have to add 18 degrees to F.
