6@6 Jazz Week 50: Your 6 Faves Miles Davis § Coltrane § Brubeck § Satchmo & ChetBaker

**Hello again! ** – Following last week’s New Orleans artists’ polls is probably the most suitable time to get some feedback for a few jazz artists. Whether or not aficionados will opt to select 6 tracks from the artists we’re polling this week remains to be seen. I’ve often heard the lovers of ‘America’s Art Form’ claim there’s no way of selecting a list of best tracks – and that one must look at entire album without regard to the songs it contains. I, for one, am not one of those aforementioned experts; so I guess by next week we’ll all know what kind of responses this thread garnered. On a personal note: I’m hoping to see alot of Coltrane votes, because of the 5 jazz artists we’re polling this week, my collection is very light when it comes to his work. What other place to get wish list recommendations than here in the arts forum?

This week’s experiment is part of our continuing quest to solicit, record, tabulate, tally & examine the musical tastes of some of the most discerning people on the internet. We run these weekly polls for a few artists each Thursday at 6PM. Whether you’re playing along from your CD library, Computer’s Jukebox program or iPod - fire it up, replace your headphones with a thinking cap & let’s get to voting…

After 103 polls: The fact that 7,304 votes have been cast by 304 different board members for 2,665 different songs still amazes me. Once again, thanks to everyone. I think the 6@6 is a pretty good resource for people who may wish to check out an artist they don’t know much about & get a basic idea which tracks are most preferred by the Doper community. Because of the dynamic nature of the music industry & the date the poll was run, tracks on some newer releases from artists that still recording are not included. As has always been our custom, if there’s a band you’d like to see a 6@6 poll for; request it – we’ll try & get it into the upcoming schedule. The majority of bands we’ve run polls on (and in the upcoming schedule) have been requested by other Café Society denizens.

Lastly: 6@6 Posting Guidelines
1st: Have a knowledge & appreciation for the artist(s) in the poll title. 2nd: Post your 6 favorite tracks from them. Cover versions & offshoots are acceptable. Segue tracks (written to be adjoined to a song from the same album) count as one song (i.e. The Abbey Road Medley & many Zappa tracks). Try to be as accurate as possible when naming your favorite tracks. Most importantly: Due to the fact the 6@6 is confined to one weekly thread, If you’re going to vote for more than one artist please make a separate post for each artist.

Without further ado…Jazz Week:

  4. It’s Easy to Remember

  6. Seraphic Light

*If there’s a ruling that the entire extended suite doesn’t count a single ‘song,’ then substitute " A Love Supreme Pt 4: Psalm"

Louis:

  1. West End Blues (OKeh, 1928)
  2. Star Dust (OKeh, 1931)
  3. High Society (Victor, 1933)

  6. Blue in Green (Columbia, 1959)

I think that the Week #54 poll should be the Erectile Dysfunction Poll, because Erectile Dysfunction is commonly abbreviated as ED, and all of the bands in that poll start with one of those letters.

Miles Davis:

  1. “So What” (from Kind of Blue)
  2. “Sanctuary” (from Bitches Brew)
  3. “Straight No Chaser” (from Milestones)
  4. “He Loved Him Madly” (from Get Up With It)

  2. Take Five (Time Out)
  3. Unsquare Dance (Time Further Out)
  4. Blue Rondo a la Turk (Time Out)
  5. St. Matthew’s Passion (Live)
  6. Maori Blues

I can see it now:

Dishwalla: “Hey, man, there’s nothing funny about ED! Why can’t we stop making fun of it and just be pure!”

Depeche Mode: “I need to think of a way to fit ‘erectile dysfunction’ into my lyrics to sound deep and depressed.”

Everclear: “When I was growing up in the ghetto we used to drink a lot and get ED.”
