6th: The Mailbag:
Questions, Comments, Requests, Predictions & Asides

You’re quite correct Lisa-go-Blind. Though the ‘subject, title and theme of both songs are similar, the tune and lyrics are far too different to consider it a cover version. The New York Dolls song credits David Johansen as the composer. The Damned version (Captain Sensible & The Softies), Captain Sensible versions (He gives me Hell) and Elton Motello versions all list Deprijck / Lacomblez & Algy Ward as composers (the latter a member of The Damned & the former a member of Plastic Bertrand).

Welcome to the 6@6 Ivan. I would second it myself – But definitely would have needed a reminder a month after Hugh Jass’ Townes Van Zandt request was set to run.

What a vunderbob suggestion. I like the Arrogant Worms, would definitely have seconded them and run them in the same week as Bob Dylan. However…

I would second all 3 of colour wolf’s requests. Going back to the B’s to squeeze in Billy Bragg & Bad Religion wouldn’t have been a problem. I’m surprised it took as long as it did to hear a request for an Ani DiFranco poll. However…

Welcome & thanks for stopping by Lisa-go-Blind. The Belle & Sebastian poll was quite a long time ago, August 2002 – Just after Storytelling and about a year before the release of Dear Catastrophe Waitress. Links to all the closed polls are (were) available in the weekly Supplemental polls.

I’m nominating The Scrivener for a good taste in music award. I left the dB’s out of the schedule because I didn’t think they would’ve garnered any interest. I would’ve definitely seconded your requests and worked them in with the D artists. As far as the Mekons, Vibrators and XTC requests, I’m sure we would’ve crossed that bridge when we got to it… However…

I would like to thank you, buh-buh-buh-BACON!! for your incredible post. What a great read. Your liner notes and comments were both passionate, ironic and (hauntingly) timely. Spoken word tracks are allowed and I tabulated ‘Corporate Protopop’ accordingly. Sorry you never got a chance to see CSC live. I can’t answer the question about the time signature in Any Day Now but I’ll ask it again for you: Do any of you music theory types or percussionists recognize => this .wma file’s tempo <= as “15/4” time?

The Last Waltz – Official SDMB Administration Request

I never really considered myself the author of these Café Society poll threads. I tabulate the results and start them each week – but felt I should share the administration’s wishes with you: all the authors of the 6@6 polls.

A little history: Back on September 7, when the 6@6 poll threads were closed (after being reported as spam) I sent this response:

Unforunately, 7 weeks and 22 polls later, I received this from the administrators:

My first instinct was to try and limit the 6@6 polls to one per week…until I looked at the tentative schedule and all the new poll requests. If I followed the administration’s limit of one poll thread per week; I’d be doing 3 times the amount of tabulating work. We wouldn’t get to the letter E until 2006. (Counting forward in my head) I’m pretty sure I’d be dead of old age (or posting from a retirement community) before we came close to polling one of my favorite artists: Zappa & The Mothers.

In closing, I want to once again thank everyone who posted to and kept the 6@6 tradition going strong. I never for one minute considered any of the threads as “too similar, very long, nonsense” that “typically get a small number of replies”. Whether or not they were “irritating others” is relative to what type of Café Society threads people have a preference in reading.

I’ve always enjoyed tallying, posting, reading (and then listening / re-listening to) other people’s selections. I normally don’t even mind the mundane task of moving all the data to an off board spreadsheet.

After 92 polls: The fact that 6,927 votes have been cast by 288 different board members for 2,479 songs just amazes me. I’ll admit to being miffed by the staff’s decision – but as most dopers know, the SDMB isn’t a democracy. Thanks to everyone…I’m sure I’ll see most of you in other threads and in other forums.

Keep on Rockin

Wait, the polls aren’t going to continue anymore? Damn, I loved these threads! Would it be possible for you to set up all four polls in one thread, rather than setting up separate threads for each poll? That way, that admin will be happy because you’re only using one thread, and I won’t have to wait until 2025 to list my top 6 XTC songs. Plus, there will be more responses to each thread!

Is that possible?

I would hope that you’d go ahead and keep doing the polls at the (unfortunately) reduced rate of one per week. Half a loaf is better than none, after all, and a quarter of a loaf is still OK. With just five polls to my credit, I had just gotten into this!

Jesus H. Christ Brown! Get a room! Sod your polls. The hamsters need a break.

There are a lot of free website hosts out there, and some of them would make it a lot easier for you to do the tabulating–in fact, some of them might let you automatically tabulate results. Do one of those, put a link in your sig, and you’ve got your polls with no front-page room taken up.

You realize that we’re paying for these hamsters now, right? I would expect that would give us some more freedom in what we could post about. Within reason, of course (No spam/commercial, offensive, etc. On-topic.)

People post about lots of random stuff in this and the site’s other forums. What’s wrong with few structured polls each week? I can’t imagine that these threads represent any kind of measurable effect on this site’s resources.

Honestly, when was the last time you even noticed a link in someone’s sig, much less went to it? This site has a built-in, existing audience that make these polls possible. Successfully starting a new site to do it would probably be a huge effort, with not enough return to make it worthwhile. As a compromise, maybe some of the info in the lead post, such as links to past results, could be offloaded to another site and linked.

Maybe everyone should start complaining about threads they don’t care for that appear on the front page. For example, I wonder how many useless Bush vs. Kerry threads from Great Debates and the Pit have graced the front page in the last few months? Can I put in a complaint to have these threads stopped so I don’t have to see them anymore?

Does the fact that someone spontaneously decided to write on the subject, as opposed to the structure and scheduling of these polls, somehow make them more palatable?
I don’t know that it’s worth paying for access to a board that pulls this kind arbitrary BS. I’ll have to consider it when my subscription is up for renewal.

Of course, perhaps the fact that so few people have registered their irritation with the loss of the polls in this thread is a sign, huh?

Well, this is a shame. I had just gotten into these this week and was looking forward to continuing in the future. I like colour wolf’s idea of combining several polls into one post. This is such a good idea, it’s a shame to let it die.

So, while music lovers miss out on this, useless trivial posts in MPSIMS, such as game threads etc can go on for 15+ pages? They annoy me, these polls don’t. WTF?
I’m paying here, I like these polls, what difference does it make if theres 3-4 on the front page for 3-4 days a week?

Bad call Mods.

I’ve never seen one of those polls. Heh. Oh, well…and I would have totally voted for Sweat Loaf or Graveyard, or maybe Lady Sniff.

Anyway, what’s so hard about having one a week? Having a song poll for every band ever, which is what it sounded like the OP was going to take the SDMB, is prohibitively expansive, no?

Damn. The main reason I paid for posting privileges was to
participate in the Top6@6 when it re-appeared.

I don’t pretend to understand the content of these polls, but I do think you have several options. The most obvious one that occurred to me was that you set up a website with your poll results. You may post here (say, once a week or so), providing links to several polls in one post. And people can certainly comment here in response to your post, if your website doesn’t allow message-board type of responses.

Your situation was not unique: we’ve taken similar action with several other topics that regularly used up three or four slots on the front page of a forum.

Your situation was unique in that I don’t have a clue what’s going on. I think it has something to do with soi-disant music and I pretty much only listen to music written before about 1930. Well, OK, I’ll go up to 1970 for pop. Anyhow, my point is that your explanation from Sept 7 convinced me (just because I believe you) that it wasn’t spam or commercial, but didn’t help me understand what it was. I was therefore more lax about letting things ride for some time.

When there were four of these posts on the front page, we got some complaints, sent throught REPORT THIS POST, and so I wrote you to say that one at a time is probably sufficient.

I hope that explains more where we’re coming from.

Yeah, right!

I’d hazard a guess that there are at about 20 “Bush Rapes Babies” threads on the front page of GD at this very moment, and at least an equal number in The Pit . It’s mostly the same eight or nine posters slapping each other on the back and congratulating each other on their clarity of vision.
Right now one member is the OP of five different threads that are open on the front page of GD, and this has been typical of that poster for some time now.

But whatever; let’s spare the hamsters.

Thanks for doing this, JohnBckWLD. I was really looking forward to the week when you got to Elvis Presley.

I’ve very much enjoyed these threads, and I hope some way can be found to continue them whilst acceding to the concerns about CS real estate. Thanks for your efforts JohnBckWLD.

Another PAYING (ahem, goddamnit!) member here saying the posts should stay!

Heck, if you’re going to shut down these threads because of some crank who gets off on tattling to the mods, I think there’s a bunch of much more useless and front-page hogging threads that should get the same treatment…I guess we all should stop living and let living and start clicking on that little exclamation point for every thread we’re tired of seeing on the front page.

Since there won’t be a Bob Dylan poll:

“Don’t criticize what you can’t understand” from: The Times They Are a’ Changin’.

Sorry, I just can’t resist an opportunity for mischief.

Ahem:I usually agree with decisions TPTB make on this board, and I appreciate what so many do to keep it maintained. I don’t agree with this decision, but that’s life. Keep up the good work.

Where did anyone say that the 6@6 polls are banned? Dex sure didn’t. He just said that four per week is too much. Read it again:

Unless my reading comprehensions skills are terrible, he’s saying that JohnBckWLD is free to continue posting these, but only one at a time. Is that so bad?

Your reading comprehension seems fine, ultrafilter. Perhaps this part of the OP flew under your radar. (bolding mine)

“My first instinct was to try and limit the 6@6 polls to one per week…until I looked at the tentative schedule and all the new poll requests. If I followed the administration’s limit of one poll thread per week; I’d be doing 3 times the amount of tabulating work. We wouldn’t get to the letter E until 2006. JohnBckWLD phrased his OP so it belongs in this forum. It is an announcement. Those who want to discuss it should take it elsewhere.

Damn, I missed the Damned and the Buzzcocks.

Damn, the 6@6 will be missed.
