60's Songs

My roomie is planning to start up a Changeling game (and for anyone who knows about Changeling the setting is the 60’s before the moonlanding and all hell breaks loose with the Sidhe returning and the Resurgence and Accordance War). He is going to start it tomorrow in fact, so I have been given the task of finding music for atmosphere.

So could people give me some really good music from that time? I already have the Forrest Gump soundtrack, but need more.

Thanks in advance.

You lost me with your scenario :stuck_out_tongue: , but have you tried the Time/Life compilations?

I, likewise, am at a loss to know what you’re talking about. (Is this some sort of roll-playing game?) However, exactly what type of 60’s music do you need? Early 60’s Pop (e.g., Phil Spector, Roy Orbison, Brenda Lee, post-Army Elvis, etc.)? British Invasion (e.g., early Beatles, Stones, Hollies, Dave Clark Five, etc.)? Motown/Stax/soul (e.g., Supremes, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Temptations, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Otis Redding, etc.)? Garage rock (e.g., Sam the Sham,"?" and the Mysterians, 13th Floor Elevators, Count Five, etc.)? Folk-Rock (e.g., Bob Dylan, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Turtles, Simon and Garfunkle, etc.)? Surf (e.g., Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Ventures, etc.)? M.O.R./Pop (e.g., Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and everybody else who sang Burt Bachrach/ Hal David compositions, etc.)? Psychedelic (e.g., later Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Doors, Jimi Hendrix, etc.)?

As you can see, this is already a lot of music and I’m just skimming the surface. (Although, given the apparent theme of your game, I’m guessing your choices would be more along the psychedelic line.)

Oh, and I’m aware it should be “role-playing game” and “Simon and Garfunkel.”

For atmosphere, go with Mo-Town. Marvin Gaye, Shirelles and the Temptations would be a good start. Smoky Robinson and the Miracles. Throw in a little Bo Diddly too. He’s really more late 50’s, but it will add some “pop” to the sounds.

Thanks people this is a great help!

As to the Changeling, yes it is a role-playing game. We’re going to play tabletop. Definately the more psychadelic/hippy stuff is needed.

Changeling is basically… faeries. Not to bog people down in it but I’ll give a quick rundown. The game itself is based on the idea that Faeries were forgotten over the times and the Nobles (the Sidhe) went back to the Dreaming (Arcadia) where they could survive being forgotten. They left all the commoners behind, and so they had to adapt by taking human form. Now they managed to survive many pitfalls, the 20’s and 30’s weren’t too bad for them but in the past century the 60’s were the best time. All those hallucinogens and people dreaming dreams of peace and hope and love your brother etc. The fae themselves don’t have to be remembered to survive now but they need human imagination to live and thrive.

Now our game is going to be set just before the Sidhe return. Shortly after the moonlanding, which stirred enough imagination to open the pathways to the Dreaming again. (They had closed before, most of the Sidhe ran off just as they closed). Basically when the Sidhe return… all hell breaks loose. Most of the commoners aren’t willing to accept being ruled now. They adapted and changed with the times, while the Sidhe stayed static pretty much.

Eventually the Sidhe win blah blah blah things go back to the old ways, almost. Commoners have more power now though still not as much as they’d like etc etc.

With our game, set in the time it was. Our players won’t have to deal with the Sidhe much, yet. Eventually we will end up in the Accordance war. But for the first bit we’ll be running around having fun. Being draft dodgers and hippies and such. And you can play pretty much any of the basic fae (Sluagh (think Goth’s), Red Caps (eat anything they can fit in their mouths and they can unhinge their jaws), Satyrs (people should know what Satyr’s are), Pooka (think fuzzy animals) and a bunch of others that resemble Leprechauns and Pixies only with slightly changed names but essentially the same.

It should be lots of fun. I can’t wait till tonight! scurries around cleaning up the apartment

You gotta have The Velvet Underground. Best 60s band by a long way. I’d recommend Venus In Furs, but Heroin and All Tomorrow’s Parties are good, too.

Hmmm… 60’s… faeries…
I’d suggest The Small Faces Ogden’s Nutgone Flake and Pink Floyd’s Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and A Sauceful Of Secrets.

Definitely look into the Time Life Set recommended by Joe K. They’re not cheap, but old “you get what you pay for rule” holds true here.

Some of the more popular & best acid / psychedelic stuff I’d recommend:

Any of the garage rock comps on the Crypt and Bomp record labels. How bout Nuggets or the Loud, Fast Out of Control (50s stuff, but still way cool) box sets?Try The Seeds too.

Jon

Yeah, I was about to say, get Nuggets. Great compilation of '60s garage band music. Sounds even more “sixties” than the great sixties stuff.

Try the “Live/Dead” album by the good ol’ Grateful Dead. Especially the Dark Star->Saint Stephen->The Eleven->Turn on Your Lovelight sequence at the beginning of the record.

“Anthem of the Sun” by the Dead is another good one IMO.

There’s even some psychedelic-tinged Motown that might be appropriate:

–“Psychedelic Shack” by The Temptations;

–“I Can’t Get Next to You” by The Temptations.

Also:

–“Season of the Witch” by Donovan;

–“Child of the Moon” by The Rolling Stones;

–“2,000 Light Years from Home” by The Rolling Stones;

–“Dandelion” by The Rolling Stones;

–“She’s a Rainbow” by The Rolling Stones;

–“Eight Miles High” by The Byrds;

–“Psychotic Reaction” by The Count Five;

–“Armenia-City in the Sky” by The Who;

–“Voices Green and Purple” by The Bees (Obscure but perfect for your RP game. It can be found on the 4 CD expanded Nuggets box set); and

–“Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” by Jimi Hendrix (great opening).
