What did the Mods listen to?

And while I’m sure Coldfire, Gaudere, Lynn and all the rest have excellent taste in music, that’s not what I’m talking about. The '60s kids with the miniskirts and stuff. What did they listen to? Every '60s music compilation I’ve found has been split between surf and stoner sounds, so I’ve got no idea for mods.

Well, in Quadrophenia they listend to The Who a lot & popped blues.

The Moderators around here??? Sheesh, probably the Divje babe flute or something.

Help! Help! A moderator’s got me!!

Pink Floyd’s Piper at the Gates of Dawn
The Move
The Smoke
The Nice
The Crazy World of Arthur Brown
The Small Faces

A lot of 60s British psychedelia

Tamla Motown stuff.

The Animals

The mod revival in the late 70’s uk was headlined by The Jam.

Paul Revere and the Raiders.

The Attack
Velvett Fogg
The Onyx
Carnaby
Big Boy Pete
Marmalade
Andromeda

Heh. Mostly American soul and R&B. The Who were mod posers and they’ll be the first to admit it. The Small Faces were closer to the mod spirit…

So, what was the ‘Mod Spirit’? How was it different from the psychadelia spirit of later Beatles albums and Jimi Hendrix and the rest of those space cadets?

The Kinks
The Animals
Manfred Mann

Stuff that was “artsy” and less R&B-based.

Mod Revival…

The Jam
The Lambrettas
The Jags
The Merton Parkas
The Yachts
Nine Below Zero

… and I think they also drifted into ska as well.

Well, to start with, the original Mod scene in England occured a few years earlier than all of that, early to mid-sixties. They weren’t space cadets; they were primarily working class kids who got into getting dressed up and dancing to r&b…the psychedelia came later, from the states. I suppose some folks who were mods at sixteen became hippies at age 20, and so forth, but in terms of fad scences, mods were a distinct place and time, separate from the late 60s stuff.

I would almost define 60s music as being pre-Hendrix and post-Hendrix; he really did come along and change everything.

A good source of anecdotes from the mod era can be found Here.
