Really surprises me how few folks ever mention Rickson.
Before anyone had ever heard of UFC, Rickson was THE MAN!
Just preaching to the choir I’m sure, but instead of just focusing on takedowns and submissions, the well-rounded fighter ought to work on greco-roman or other stand-up grappling.
Rickson was considered to represent the Gracies in the UFC, but Royce (being gangly and scrawney) winning would make BJJ look more impressive. That and Rickson had some spat with the family at the time. It depends where you look though; Rickson is talked about all too much in many circles. The real unsung stud of that family is Rolls; too bad he died.

He scared Mir and dominated Herring. I thought if that Herring fight had been 6 months later, it might have lasted half as long, because Lesnar would have choked him out. Even I could spot opportunities he was missing.
