When I recently surfed by the comic strip 9 Chickweed Lane I saw no characters that I remotely recognized. The strip has apparently gone back in time again to grandma’s World War 2 career as a dance hall girl/spy, but other than that I’ve got no clue as to what’s going on. Anybody got a clue? Is there any hope that it will return to the misadventures of the Burber women’s (and their veterinarian’s) love life anytime soon?
WTF? and the woman is…Julie Andrews? Or a Von Trapp?.. I’ve been waiting for Edda’s wedding. I hope I live long enough to see that, the way this thing is going, could be years.
Have they gone back again or is this just a repeat of those strips? I guess it’s new because the original ones spent a lot more time with grandma and the troops.
As near as I can tell, it’s gone back in time and is telling the story of what actually happened to Bill when he went missing in action after D-Day. Juliette found his “tombstone” in France and the story has been unfolding as she ponders how the man she thought was her father could both be buried in France and in the US 40 years later.
Is it just me or has McEldowney just become insufferably self-indulgent the last three years or so. I used to read Chickweed all the time but it’s dropped off my radar because of stuff like this and the last 6-month diversion into WWII. I don’t even think the Comics Curmudgeon makes fun of it anymore, and not because it’s gotten too good.
I guess Comics Curmudgeon has given up, and on Pibgorn, too. The comments section has long been disabled for 9CL on gocomics. There is occasionally a bit of information to be gleaned from the comments at CC, if you have an hour to scroll through.
