90s dance party

I don’t listen to The Orb often these days, but sometimes they are just right, and this is wonderful. I love Rickie Lee Jones’s voice on this.

I’ve got a copy of the just shy of 40-minute-long version of Blue Room somewhere…

I was a club kid in the 90s, and Sorrow Townby Peach was a song that always got us onto the floor. There were a lot of songs – ones that I may not have known the name of, but knew the beat

There was a fantastic mix of Sarah McLachlan’s Possession, as well.

Now I want to go dig up my old mixtapes.

Count this as an example of a thread not going how I expected. Not that it’s a bad thing! I welcome all your different booty-shaking grooves. I was just expecting a LOT more American top 40, hip-hop and pop. Consider me schooled, in a good way.

Not very. And if you were at raves, you were hearing many of these songs.

How about Basement Jaxx - Red Alert
Daft Punk - Around the World

This summer I saw Underworld and Basement Jaxx at the Hollywood Bowl. And The Chemical Brothers at another party. Good summer.

Maybe we should put this down to regional differences, but in the UK & much of Europe this stuff was very popular. It’s hard to over-emphasise how much people like dancing to obscure songs. But some of the most popular tracks were actually produced in America. New York House, New Jersey Garage, Detroit Techno, Chicago Acid, even the West Coast had a UK chart hit with Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of Consciousness’. I’d hazard a guess that New York House was probably much more popular in London than it was in it’s hometown.

So, L-Hap, when is this party? Because I’m coming whether you like it or not

The Adrian Sherwood remix of the Wolfgang Press song Christianity.

The Prodigy, Utah Saints and the Shaman have already been mentioned. A few that were staples of parties at various points in my teens:

Paul van Dyk - For An Angel
Robert Miles - Children
ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)
Berri - the Sunshine After the Rain
Bang - Shooting Star
E-rotic - Max Don’t Have Sex With Your Ex

Shooting Star… has not held up well. On reflection, I’m not sure it ever held up well. Ah, happy hardcore.

I used to love this from the early 90s:

The Age Of Love (Jam & Spoon mix)

20-odd years later, it just seems a bit processional. Stately, even.

BT and Tori Amos, Blue Skies

Peaches, Fuck the Pain Away

I know it’s late to the party (1999) but I can’t believe no one mentioned Darude-Sandstorm.

And perhaps less well known outside Canada;
Dream Warriors-my definition of a boombastic jazz style

That and “Wash your face in my sink” both made the UK top 20.

A recent mostly hip-hop 90s set I did (very vaguely prom-themed):

Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-A-Lot
Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai
California Love - 2Pac
Steal My Sunshine - LEN
Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim
Insane in the Brain - Cypress Hill
Regulate - Warren G
Mambo No. 5 - Lou Bega
No Diggity - Blackstreet
Funky Monks - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Gin and Juice - Snoop Doggy Dogg
Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
O.P.P. - Naughty by Nature
Mo Money Mo Problems - The Notorious B.I.G.
Jump Around - House of Pain
Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It - Will Smith
Praise You - Fatboy Slim

I’d dance my butt off to that set!

Fair warning: if you’re anything like me this film will make you fall hard for Steve Coogan.
Anyhoo, +1 for Groove is in the Heart (now available in Target ads ) and Let Me Clear My Throat!

Now all the ladies in the place
If you got real hair, real fingernails
If you got a job, you going to school
And y’all need nobody to help you handle your business
Make some noise
YEAH!

I am also not believing as that song is literally used to establish a movie/tv scene as “late 90s rave or dance party”.
And what kind of weak-ass dance party are people throwing without
DMX - Ruff Ryders’ Anthem
Beastie Boys - Sure Shot
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of
Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M.
NIN - Closer

duality72 - I was looking for my “Senior Year Gangsta Frat Party Mix” CD. Thanks for finding it!

OMFG did we forget New Order - Confusion (Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix)?

I thought that the song was from the 1980s, but the remix was 1990s.

Just made the dealine – 1999’s Smooth by Rob Thomas and Santana. As of 2013, according to Wiki, Smooth was the “2nd most seccessful song of all time.” I wonder how they figure this?
