A big hand for Stoid, she ate a book.

My favorite part of that thread was where Stoid said (i) her one-month diet in which she didn’t lose weight conclusively proved that dieting doesn’t work and (ii) “one person does not a study make” (in response to another poster’s cite of a study done by one guy for decades).

Geez, seems like this thread only confirms Stoid’s exaggerated assertion that everyone is hostile to overweight people. Perhaps it would have been better not to take her to task over a MPSIMS thread.

Of course it will confirm that–to Stoid. For us rational folks, it’ll just confirm that everyone is hostile to Stoid.

Yeah, I guess the character of the Doper being pitted must sometimes be considered as the source for a Pit thread.

I have nothing against fat people. I’ve struggled with my weight myself on and off for many years, and right now I’m in an ‘on’ phase and have about 20 pound to get back to a good size & healthy BMI (damn you, grad school!). But, like JSexton, I know why I’m overweight. I snack too much and exercise too little. And I know I can lose weight with diet and exercise, I just have to apply myself.

The problem with Stoid’s thread is not “haha, fatty-fat”, it’s her absurdly black and white approach to dieting and weight loss. The beginning of her thread was all about yo-yo dieting and cultural ideas of beauty. She even said:

Then, around page 5, she throws all that out and declares that calories are a big fat lie, and fat people don’t eat too much, they are just predisposed to fatness. Why? Because she found The Book. The Book contains The Truth, The Way, and The Light, and can do no wrong. And it’s all science!

I actually wish her well with losing weight - I am well aware of the struggle it is both physically and psychologically. Hell, I’m all for her trying out low-carb, it may well work for her. But her attitude about having found the one true answer is irritating.

The best part is when she was virtually shrieking at people to educate themselves because. . . well, because she read half a book. I literally LOL’ed while reading that post.

Look, this isn’t about pointing and laughing at fat people. If Stoid had posted a sincere OP about trying to understand why she has issues losing weight, I’m sure plenty of people would have quite earnestly come in and posted helpful tips, advice, and encouragement. We’re a bunch of douches here, don’t get me wrong, but even Dopers (generally) aren’t going to shit on people for trying to honestly better themselves.

But see, this is Stoid- she is never, ever wrong. Need proof? Go read any of her legal threads. And really, this attitude of hers extends to a good chunk of her posts (well, that I notice, but that may certainly just be confirmation bias). The more wrong she is proven to be, the longer and more rambling her replies will become- big blocks of text which make little to no logical sense. This is nothing new for her. On the plus side, I always know a Stoid thread is going to be some sort of beautiful trainwreck and for that enjoyment, I cannot hate her.

“. . . and for that, we thank you.” As they say on the Tosh.0 show.

Even doubly irritating is her refusal to even acknowledge questions in that thread which ask her for cites.

For instance, in her OP, she states that weight loss is “a hundred times harder for me than for most people.” Later in the thread she pontificates that “I like evidence, proof, facts, data…I’m just wacky that way”. So what does she do when asked for proof of her statement? She either ignores these types of questions or trots out one of her standard, snotty, angry-fat-girl phrases.

Yeah. I’m in that thread, posting links and information about my bacon, eggs, chicken skin and hamburger diet (I exaggerate, but I do get about 60-65% of my calories from fat) and nobody’s really taking me to task over it. I can only assume that they give Stoid shit because she’s an easy target.

I hope it works for her. When she started that thread, I sent her a PM with links to a different book with mostly the same information in it, and resolved to stay out of what I knew would end up as a contentious bullshit trainwreck, just because her name was at the top of it. But you know what? I feel, especially when I see posters call her out as if she’s spewing absolute garbage with no basic in scientific fact, that I should a) provide the information I’ve been using, and b) show people that it can actually work if you do it. Because nobody’s going to take it coming from Stoid, and that’s sad.

It didn’t help that she started by lamenting that she’d been dieing for a couple weeks and not really lost anything, so clearly that means her metabolism is fucked and she’s an anomaly. Er, no, it means you’ve only been dieting a short time. I noted that I’d actually gained weight over two weeks in my diet period but overall lost weight over those two months.

She also mentioned that she had lost significant weight before but didn’t respond (that I saw while I was reading the thread) to questions about how that had happened and whether she’d tried that again.

Plus, there are weight loss support group threads posted monthly, but I haven’t seen her turn up there (last I checked the thread and that I recall). People are posting about all kinds of methods and generally being supportive, so I don’t know why she wouldn’t seek that out.

Hmm . . . You sure you don’t know why? Really think about it now . . .

That’s a bit of an extreme approach.

Usually works, though.

They don’t call it a starvation diet for nothing. (And frankly, I did note that I thought she was eating way too little on her diet even before her theoretical second cut in intake.)

Can I blame the iPhone’s autocorrect?

It’s not my fault I suck at spelling; it’s technology’s fault. It’s more than just typing in, words out… Right?

It works, though. After a while you’ll look like a skeleton.

Out-of-body experiences are so slimming!
Anyway, Stoid is an idiot. I’ve never seen her admit to not knowing something, and it’s never her fault.

But low-carb works really well for some people, and there isn’t anyone who wouldn’t be better off consuming a small fraction of the sugar the average American eats. I hope that fact doesn’t get overlooked in, or tarnished by, that thread.

No one racing in the Tour de France is fat, despite consuming as much as 9000 caloriesa day. And it is the extremely rare individual who is forced into a restricted calorie diet, i.e. adrift at sea, or imprisoned in a forced labor camp, and comes out the other side sporting love handles.

Oh not at all. You see we liberals will also absolve people of responsibility due to reasons of circumstances after birth and upbringing.

Pretty sure you can’t fuck dogs here. Even if you call it making love.

I just love the way she peppers her lengthy screeds with bolded, italicized, underlined text, as if one form of emphasis just isn’t enough to reinforce her point. Frankly, I’m surprised she hasn’t added COLORED ENLARGED ALL CAPS
to the mix, because I’m just too stupid to understand where her point is without a giant fucking signpost explaining it to me. I try not to let style detract from the points but, fuck me if her style of posting doesn’t look like something off a nutso conspiract website. Thank god we don’t allow animated GIFs here.
