Yes, I’m sure Barnum & Bailey is considered acceptable by a society whose standards for such things are influenced by the very fact that circuses are considered tradition. Gee, I wonder why bullfighting isn’t illegal in Spain yet.

Winning a case in court that you are treating animals humanely seems like something of a cite.* You seem to be quite certain that they aren’t treating the animals well, but I have yet to see any information but assertions to back this.

This thread does call out for a big cite on the treatment of the animals at Barnum & Bailey Circus. Can the anti-circus posters support their position of animal cruelty with perhaps a serious Humane Society* study that specifically address Barnum & Bailey and not other smaller circus? I was under the impression that B&B got a passive grade in general.

PETA studies are of course worth nothing at all.

Disclaimer: I am an animal lover, I support the humane Society, World Wildlife Fun and even Green Peace but I hate PETA intensely and I hate claims without support.

Generally speaking, Barnum & Bailey is not on the top of HSUS’s list of bad folk, but there have been a number of incidents - you can get a pretty good picture by just searching their website for Barnum. (Most of the summaries say Ringling Bros, but it’s officially "Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.)

So they’re not great on animal rights - but anything that involves taking an animal out of anything resembling it’s natural habitat just so it can perform for humans is by definition not going to be a great in that field. Are they are horrible as PETA would have you think? Of course not, because PETA is composed of a bunch of hot-headed, reactionary idiots who make those of us who are serious about not making sick elephants perform until they fall over dead look bad.

(And don’t even get me started on PETA-type vegetarians. No one cares what you eat or why. Please shut up.)

Hint: executions, public or private, are not generally performed with the condemned’s best interests in mind.

Anyway, if a society cares enough to sentence its criminals to death, it ought to care enough to watch.

There have been two cites that Barnum & Bailey is inhumane to their animals, and so far the only opposing argument goes something like, “But some guy said they’re not!”

The treatment of animals at the circus is appalling. PETA should absolutely be there telling people what’s going on. That’s their job.

Actually, no it isn’t, there are government agencies that police the treatment of animals rather closely. I find it highly unlikely that it is true that circus animals are mistreated and the idea of beating an animal the size of an elephant into obedience is simply amazing.

PETA’s only goal is to make all human/animal interaction illegal or impossible. Over the years they have learned to tone that down and to wrap their message in things like “circus animals are abused” in order to get support from celebs and Joe Average but if you dig a little you’ll still find it. Remember “a boy is a rat is a pig”? Dogs “set free” in traffic? Strays “adopted”, killed in a van and dumped in a dumpster? PETA is no advocate for humane treatment of animals.

They are. They recently got a law passed overwhelmingly here in California to make chicken and pig farming significantly more humane.

This is debateable, at least the chicken farming.

Agreed. PETA hates animals. Hates humans. And hates themselves. It’s truly comical - almost unbelievable. But it wouldn’t be make believe , if you believed in me.
