A call for movie quotes

Bit of a background to set the stage.

I am one of several people running an academic competition near my university in a few weeks. We are in dire need of movie and TV questions. Before I start asking for quotes from shows and movies (y’all KNOW you know some obscure quotes) I’d like to know if anyone here is going to a tournament on the fifteenth called Capitol Punishment II. If anyone is, I’ll respectfully ask that this thread be closed. If not, I’d love for people to share memorable quotes from favorite movies, and that includes not only from this decade but especially from the 70s, since my film collection is devoid of 70s movies for the most part. Hell, the earliest movies I have are from 1979 (I think), with most coming from 1992-1999.

Anyone? Anyone?

Hmm here I have a few… Don’t know how obscure some are though.

“I do long for death… but fear it.” Draco in Dragonheart

“It’s truth, but truth is not always appearance.” Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow

“Dreams die hard and we hold them in our hands long after they have turned to dust” Bowen in Dragonheart

“Crazy? Crazy’s on the bus out of here remember?” The Negotiator can’t remember who said it exactly

“I can never regret. I can feel sorry, but its not the same thing.” The Last Unicorn

Hope these help!

Those may indeed help, Topaz, thanks.

What I need most now are quotes from 70s movies . . . I wasn’t around then, so I don’t even know any movies from that era. I have already written questions on Saturday night fever, the godfather, norma rae and when harry met sally.

Can anyone even give me some names? Without a movie name I can’t do anything.

70s movies:

Jaws, Star Wars, Rocky, The Deer Hunter, Dog Day Afternoon, Apocalypse Now.

70s TV shows:

All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, MASH, Fantasy Island.

I don’t want to offer any specific quotes without checking them first, but this might be a start for you. You can probably find quotes for all of these in the Internet Movie Database.

I’m trying to find my Oscar book, which would obviously have loads of movies listed, but no luck yet.

As soon as I hit “submit,” I saw the book right in front of me! I’ve only listed movies that I think would have some good, somewhat well-known quotes:
1970: Love Story, Patton

1971: A Clockword Orange, Fiddler on the Roof, Diamonds Are Forever, The French Connection, Shaft

1972 Deliverance, The Poseiden Adventure, Ben

1973: American Graffiti, The Exorcist, The Sting, Last Tango in Paris, The Paper Chase, The Way We Were

1974: Nothing that hasn’t already been mentioned

1975: One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest

1976: Network, Taxi Driver

1977: Annie Hall, Close Encounters of the Third Kind

1978: Midnight Express

1979: Kramer vs. Kramer, 10

Do you exclusively want 70s movies quotes? Does dialogue count, or you want short, snappy quotes?
If you just want titles of famous 70s films:
A Clockwork Orange, The French Connection, Jaws, The Exorcist, Chinatown, The Godfather, Deliverance, The Andromeda Strain, Annie Hall, Sleeper, The Deer Hunter, Alien. I’ll remember a bunch more as soon as I post.

Here’s a few quotes, mostly un-70s:

(From memory)
“It’s not the years, it’s the milage.”
– Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981)

(From the video)
“In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo DaVinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love and 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”
– Harry Lime (Orson Welles), “The Third Man” (1949)

(From the video)
“The government can’t be concerned any longer with outmoded penalogical theories, soon we may be needing all our prison space for politcal offenders.”
– Minister of the Interior (Anthony Sharp), “A Clockwork Orange” (1971)

(From the video)
“I was cured alright.”
– Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell), “A Clockwork Orange” (1971)

(From the video)
“A good body with a dull brain is as cheap as life itself.”
– Lentulus Batiatus (Peter Ustinov), Spartacus (1960)

And of course one of my all-time faves:
“I yam Spahtikiss”
– Tony Curtis as Antoninus, Spartacus (1960)
(I guess you had to be there…)

I’ll scrounge for more, but I don’t know if I’ll have any luck finding 70s quotes.

'70s movies you say? (snicker) We’ll we’ve done two fine threads here in MPSIMS, no reason to spare this thread from the plague.

“I am Zoot’s identical twin sister- Dingo”

“We are now the Knights who say ‘Ekky-ekky-ekky-ekky-z’Bang, zoom-Boing, znourrrwringmm’”

“I blow my nose at you, so-called Arthur Keeeng!”
—MP and the Holy Grail
(cheers)

Rats! Our family favorites are from 80s movies. Pleeeeeeeez? Pleeeeeeeez can’t I sneak 'em in here?

“Finally! A Salesman who understands me!” From ruthless people

“220, 221, whatever it takes” --Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom trying to fake his knowledge of residential electrical wiring.

Can’t remember the third one I had in mind. People magazine (gulp, did I just say that?) recently had a feature on Jaws, all these years later, and I think they had some quotes in there.

“And of course one of my all-time faves:
“I yam Spahtikiss”
– Tony Curtis as Antoninus, Spartacus (1960)
(I guess you had to be there…)”

Yes, and a line which is repeated in several forms by Tom Everett Scott in “That Thing You Do” as Guy Patterson.

missbunny: thanks so much for the list  We are, as it happens, not even in dire need of well-known movies. The occasional obscure or cult film has its place in TRASH competitions.

I may just ask jeeves (askjeeves.com) about some of these flicks.

Try this resource:

Go to http://us.imdb.com/Sections/Years/

Pick any year you’re interested in, for example, 1973. http://us.imdb.com/Sections/Years/1973/

There, you can browse titles alphabetically. Let’s say you pick ‘A’.
http://us.imdb.com/TitlesByYear?year=1973&start=A&nav=/Sections/Years/1973/include-titles

On the list is the movie, American Graffiti. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0069704

On the left is a link that says, Memorable Quotes

On that page you will find:

“Carol: Your car is uglier than I am. Oops, that didn’t come out right.”

You’ll find lots of great stuff at imdb. Good luck with your contest.

And if you can’t find as many quotes as you need at imdb.com, you can at least use that site to get a list of movie names from the 70’s. Then go to http://www.wavplace.com/moviea.htm and see if they have quotes from any of the movies on your list. They have thousands of quotes - and since it’s a .wav file site, you can even listen to them.

(From memory)
“I could eat a baby’s butt through a park bench.”
– Dan Akroyd, “Neighbors” (1981)

(Following quotes taken from “The Phantom’s Ultimate Video Guide”)

“Welcome to prime time, bitch!”
– Freddy Kruger, “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3”

“Can you prove that it didn’t happen?”
– Criswell, “Plan 9 From Outer Space”

“It’s a sunny, woodsy day in Lumberton: Get those chainsaws out!”
– Radio Announcer, “Blue Velvet”

“When I want your opinion, I’ll beat it out of you.”
– Chuck Norris, “Code of Silence”

“I like you, Solly, so I’m going to kill you last.”
– Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Commando”

Don’t forget these classics (from memory):

“Rosebud.”
– Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), “Citizen Kane” (1941)

“Whoa!”
– Neo (Keanu Reeves), “The Matrix”

“I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog too.”
– Wicked Witch of the West (?), “The Wizard of Oz”

“What we have here is a failure to communicate.”
– Warden (Strother Martin), “Cool Hand Luke”

“Shop smart! Shop S-Mart!”
– Ash (Bruce Campbell), “Army of Darkness”

(from memory, but this might not be exact)
“I am not an animal, I am a human being!”
– John Merrick (John Hurt), “The Elephant Man” (1980)

(From audio clip)
“The gun is good. The penis is evil, the penis shoots seeds.”
– Zardoz, “Zardoz” (1974)

Speaking of cult flicks, Rocky Horror was 1975, there must have been something quotable in that one.

Any of these even remotely useful?

“Ladies don’t start fights, but they finish them.” --Marie, The Aristocats, 1971

“So long, Gramercy 5-9971. Have a nice marriage. And may you soon have many extensions.” --Harry Pepper, telephone installer (Herb Edelman), Barefoot in the Park, 1967

“Gort. Klaatu baraada nikto.” --Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), The Day The Earth Stood Still, 1951

“Now you know why they call me Dirty Harry. Every dirty job that comes along.” --Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood), Dirty Harry, 1971 (Couldn’t use the obvious one.)

“You know, if you shoot me you’ll lose a lot of these humanitarian awards.” --Fletch (Chevy Chase), Fletch, 1985

“Remember, honey, on your wedding day it’s all right to say yes.” --Dorothy (Jane Russell) to Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, 1953

“There is no sanctuary!” --Logan (Michael York), Logan’s Run, 1976

“Oh, Frank, my lips are hot. Kiss my hot lips.” Major Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), MAS*H, 1970

Oooooo–Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 1975, er, just search MPSIMS for most of the movie script.

“Trust me, like it says on the money.” --God (George Burns), Oh God!, 1977

“Have you any idea what it’s like to be on a party line with a sex maniac?” --Jan Morrow (Doris Day), Pillow Talk, 1959

iampunha, I have a lovely (not-so-)little book entitled The Dictionary of Film Quotations. Let me know if you have a specific movie, actor, subject or year you need/want a quote from/about. The list above is not as comprehensive as it could be, because I stuck with movies I’ve seen and know the context of the quote. Well, all but one of them, anyway.

Actually, what Strother Martin said, in “Cool Hand Luke” was:

“What we have here is failure to communicate.”

No ‘a’.

And in the movie version of MAS*H, the ahem head nurse was Margaret **O’**Houlihan. Somewhere between the big screen and the little screen, she lost her O.

“Get your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!” (Planet of the Apes, 1968)

Also, my sig is pretty obscure, but it is from a '70s movie.

random offerings…
“It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we’ve got a full tank of gas, a half a pack of cigarrettes, it’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses”(Elwood)
“Hit it!”(Jake) Blues Brothers

“You screw up just this much, and you’ll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong!” (Maverick’s CO) TopGun
