I spent some time online and in jewelry stores learning about the 5 C’s. How to read a GIA diamond report. Etc, etc.
What I have recently learned is how diamonds are priced.
A man named Martin Rapaport has created a system of “Rap prices” for diamonds that are used and followed by all diamond dealers.
Here is a link with a little info on how these reports work.
The cite says:
However, a Jeweler in the Boston Jewelry building today told me that many people “get them from the internet” and come in armed with them knowing what to expect to pay. Most dealers would openly refer to the “Rap price” and how much below it they were selling the diamonds for.
I believe this tool would be a powerful weapon in my arsenal of diamond shopping, along with generally being educated about diamonds. I want to have a copy to use to crunch some numbers in MS Excel and have an idea what price I would like to pay for the specific Carat, Color and Clarity diamonds that I am looking at.
However, I cannot find a copy of the report online.
Anyone have a cite?
Oh, anyone who wants to chip in some thoughts on diamonds in general is more than welcome. But, can the anti-diamond folks take it easy on me?
(I agree that Debeers is evil. Buying diamonds is contributing to the death and misery of small African children working the mines, etc. But, I alone can’t change this awful custom. I figure not getting ripped of by the jewelry shop is better than nothing in the fight against the evil diamond industry.)
Ahh, yes, it is copywrited. So, no one post the contents of the list. However, if it is on the web then there is nothing wrong with posting links to it.
From the ATMB “FAQ - guidelines for posting at the SDMB” sticky thread on copyrights:
If I had thought of this I would have mentioned something in the OP. Sorry!
**Mod’s please let me know if I am mis-understanding the rules in some way.
I think you do misunderstand. The rules apply to links to site whose owners hold the copyright, or permission from the copyright holder, to display. I don’t believe the mods would allow links to a site with material that is in violation of a copyright.
FYI: I have been somewhat slow responding to posts in this thread by GQ standards. This is because I am not checking this at home when my SO is in the room!
In regards to Q.E.D.'s post: I guess I will err on the side of caution and withdraw my request for this cite. Mod’s can close the thread or just let it slide away into QC oblivion.
