My favorite team is the Yankees (waves at Jackknifed Juggernaut), and while a WS win is always awesome they’ve had their share and are likely to have more in the future.
My #2 team is the Nationals. They really need to at least get to the WS.
I don’t have a #3 or #4. Though I’m always happy when good things happen for the Giants (football) and the Rangers (hockey), so I guess they would be them.
The Cleveland Indians are my favorite team and have not won it all since the year before I was born. I’ll take a World Series win form them over two each for the Boston Bruins and the Cleveland Browns which are the only other teams I really care about.
I would take one championship for the Cincinnati Reds over four for the Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Bengals, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Red Wings, and Chelsea F.C.
I was going to say “what is this other favorite team you speak off, and why do I care about their results”. But damn, this is absolutely correct (although I don’t care much about the Giants:)).
5 years ago I said I would trade away any chance of the 49ers ever winning the super bowl for the Giants to win one World Series. I would make the same deal today.
Technically the Giants are my favorite team, but I would choose for California to win a football/basketball championship, or for the Warriors to win an NBA Finals, before I would want the Giants to win another. So it’s a no brainer to rack up the non-Giants championships.
True story: Back in 2003, Labor Day weekend, my wife and I were visiting her mother about an hour away from home. As we were getting ready to leave, I started getting some pretty severe chest pains. Went to the emergency room, they thought that it looked like a heart attack, and sent me to the hospital a few miles away that had a catheterization lab so they could do an angiogram. I remember laying on the table getting wheeled in, and the cardiologist came over to explain what was going on, told me in a flat, matter of fact tone that it appeared that I was having a mild heart attack. And all I remember thinking was “Fuck. This is the year that the Cubs are going to win the World Series, and I’m gonna fucking die and miss it.”
Turns out, it wasn’t a heart attack after all (they figured out later that it was likely pleurisy causing the chest pains). I don’t even want to talk about the 2003 Cubs…
So yeah, one Cubs championship for me would probably trump any number of championships for any of my other favorite teams, and most of those have won a championship in my lifetime anyway.
Considering that the Pirates haven’t won a championship since 1980, I’ll let the Pens go for the time being and have the Bucs and the Steelers get the four. The Pirates deserve it and the Steelers will be even more ahead of the league than they are.
