"A Christmas Story"

We had a thread a little while ago about the Princess Bride, and, IIRC, it was unanimous, at least among those who posted in the thread, that we all liked the Princess Bride.
I was watching A Christmas Story on TNT, and thinking, “Everyone I know loves this movie. Wonder if it’s as good as TPB?”
I put it to you, members of the Teemsters Union (ya like, huh?)- is A Christmas Story as good, or, at least, do we all like it?
I ask this because, IMHO, I think it’s written well, even though the humor isn’t as subtle as PB, it’s still very funny, getting a view of the world through the fantastic views of a kid at Christmas (“Cool! My decoder pin!”), but we also recognize what’s going on as a third party (“A crummy commercial? Son of a bitch!”).
I love it, how about you?

If I were a baseball player, and I got beaned by a fastball, I wouldn’t want medical attention. I’d want my limp, lifeless body flung to 1st, cause, dammit, I earned it!

I love it! It’s definitely one of my favorites of all time! It just begs to be quoted:

“Fra-gee-lay. Must be Italian.”

“It… was… soap poisoning!”

“I want an official Red Rider, carbide-action 200-shot range model air rifle!”

And, of course,

“You’ll shoot your eye out.”

hee hee hee

Huh? Never heard of it.

That’s too bad, GuanoLad, though I’m not surprised. It wasn’t a very successful movie when it came out in 1983. I’m sure the nondescript title did it some harm; I certainly never heard of it until it was on video years after it was released.

It was based on a book by Jean Shepherd, who was a radio personality and writer of some note, and it is probably the funniest, most charming and most real family Christmas movie ever made. It’s impossible to describe; if you get a chance to see it, do so. It’s a joy.

And that Farkas kid!! Certainly the prototype for the doll-mutilating Sid from Toy Story!

I’ve used the phrase “lobsters coming out of my nose” in conversation so you know I’m a fan.

GuanoLad, it might not work for you. A lot of the humor of the movie is about various idiosyncrasies of American culture and it might not translate.

Of course when we watch it this year, there’ll be the touch of sadness of knowing Jean Shepherd won’t be watching along.

I love the Christmas Story. An all time classic.

It’s based, loosely of course, on Jean Shepard’s childhood growning up in Indiana. I read this in his obit just a few months ago.

Nothing like the soft glow of electric sex in the window.

This is my 2nd favorite movie, beaten out by a nose by Hoosiers. Dang, I must have something for midwestern, oldtime movies.

Well, shut my mouth. It’s also illegal to put squirrels down your pants for the purposes of gambling.

If you liked the movie, read the book. It’s called “In God We Trust; All Others Pay Cash.” The books actually a collection of short stories about our little pal Ralphie.

Clasic. The sceene at Marshal Fields with the Santa is great.

Ho…

Ho…
Ho.

“The large print givith, and the small print taketh away.”
Tom Waites, “Step Right Up”

I also love this movie… it’s just too funny. The way the father makes up all those wonderful nonsensical profanity strings.

And it is Very quotable:

“You used up all the glue on PURPOSE!”

“And a thing in the stock which tells time”

and my favorite when flustered:

“NOT A FINGER!”

How do you like that! And without so much as a “Kiss my foot” or “Have an apple”!

And it was filmed in Cleveland, which only makes it better

Favorite line: “Dad’s gonna kill Ralphie!”

Favorive scene: The tongue to the flagpost. The look on their faces when the teacher realizes he’s out there is classic.

God, I love this movie.

“I triple dog dare you!!”

The kid bothering Ralphie while he’s in line to see Santa always makes me laugh. “I like Santa”…“Don’t bother me, I’m thinking”

“Football?? What’s a football?”

Anyone ever see the sequel to this movie? I never even knew there was one until I was watching TV and it came on. I don’t think any of the original cast is in it. IIRC, Charles Grodin played the dad, and the Bumpus’ (remember the Bumpus hounds that ruin Christmas dinner?) are shown. They are white trash hillbillies who have about 40 people living in the house. Ralphie is obsessed with tops (those toys that spin). It is horrible.

Great minds discuss ideas;
Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.

“oooooohh fuuuuudge…” Ralphie getting Santa’s boot in his face still cracks me up. Someday I am going to have an electric sex lamp for my front window.

A longtime Shepherd fan, saddened by his recentl death and the scant coverage of it. One reason my car radio stays tuned to NPR. If you haven’t read his other work try Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters or Banjo Butt Meets Julia Child.

Uh-oh…looks like I’m going to the the odd one out again. I hate this movie. Every year my parents watched it, and I would find something else to do. Then again…I hate almost all Christmas movies. I hate “Miracle on 34th Street,” “It’s a Wonderful Life”…

Hmmm. Maybe I’m just a Grinch. (One of the few specials I like…)

“There is no worse lie than a truth misunderstood by those who hear it.” - William James

I love this movie. My favorite scenes are Ralphie coming down the stairs in the bunny suit (the look on Peter Billingsly’s face makes me laugh every time) and the staff at the Chinese restaurant singing Christmas carols.

whining “I can’t put my arms down.”

“I can’t get up…”

Is the little piggie gonna eat his mashed potatoes?? BE a little piggie…oink oink…that little kid’s laugh is adorable.

Oh and the part where he gives his teacher a fruit basket as a present to get an A on his them…LOl
this is one of my all time favorites.Princess Bride I would have to say falls second to this. One reason being that for some reason Christmas movies, even though watched during this time of year generally, touch me a little deeper. Im such an emotional wreck. But i love it.

so you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts. what’s so amazing about really deep thoughts? Tori Amos

I enjoy this movie as well. I have also seen the other movie mentioned above, it is not as good as ACS. My wife however does not like the movie. Not really sure why but she refuses to watch it, I will watch it almost anytime it comes on.

A whole bunch of good lines.
