Why do I have this feeling that, much like the Mayan calendar thing, over the millennium, as civilizations rise and fall and people forget where the clock came from, a mythology will grow about the world ending (or some other momentous event) when it reaches 10,000…
I’m not sure I agree with Bezos on how it’ll profoundly change our world view or whatever, but I still think it’s a pretty cool idea.
My twisted mind wandered to My Grandfather's Clock - Wikipedia and it struck me that the folks working on the clock only need to get it to last an hour after Bezos dies. He’d never know the difference and he would have blown all that money on a canard or will-o-the-wisp. Poetic justice?
Heh, we’re a counting society. Remember when handy was going to bring the board to a standstill when he hit 10,000 posts?
I suspect you’re right. 10,000 years from now society will be all freaking that it’s the end of the world. Oh wait, maybe not. <whew> Dodged that bullet. Wouldn’t it be cool if we developed a clock that would run for 50,000 years? And away we go again.
