As for the OP, what really pisses me off about situations like that is when the racist fuck assumes that I’m just as racist as he/she is. You know, they lean in, grab your knee, and say “you know what I mean.”
No, I don’t. And how dare you, you little piece of shit, assume that I’m as ignorant and as narrow-minded as you are. If you’re racist, there ain’t much I can do about that, but I can pop you one if you insult me.
The majority of black people I meet are really assholes, and I meet a lot of them. I went to a 80% black school, and my best friend is black. Most of the ones I meet seem to think the world owes them something. Or, that white people are somehow oppressing them. They exhibit the exact same feelings as the white racist, just reversed.
If you’ve ever seen a black movie, or listened to black music, you’ve probably heard disparaging remarks aimed at white people. Also, many black people seem to think white girls are ‘easy’. So, they will date them, and generally treat them like shit. Why the girls put up with this, I don’t know.
Of course, there are plenty of nice, non-prejudiced black people out there, I’m just saying the majority I meet generally aren’t nice, and are extremely prejudiced. I’m certainly not saying that racist views can be justified.
Anyway, in conclusion, white people can’t be singled out. Black people are just as prejudiced towards white people, not to mention other races.
You mean all black people aren’t exactly the same? Wow! I thought they just stamped them all out of sheet metal and sprayed them with primer so they wouldn’t rust.
You misunderstood me. It’s perfectly OK for the UNCF to restrict the scholarships it gives to black people. What reeks to me is that it’s unnacceptable to set up an organization that does the same thing for white people.
I wouldn’t accept a scholarship from an organization that restricts its members based on race or sex or religion, anyway.
I believe in equality. The societal stigma I was referring to is one that does not promote equality, and that pisses me off.
With not a great deal of effort, you could (if you really wanted to) find that a lot of scholarships are limited to people of Irish, French, German, British, Scots, Norwegian, Italian, Serb, etc. ancestry. Blacks need not apply. Now, if the peculiar institution of slavery as practiced in the U.S. had not forbidden the black slaves from sharing any knowledge of their ancestry with their children, would you object to scholarships limited to Ibos, Bantus, Maasai, Biafrans, etc.? Or do you simply object that one particular ethnic group (out of all the groups that do it) has scholarships?
As to States Rights: twaddle.
The Southern States never objected to the suppression of States Rights in the Dred Scott decision or in the Fugitive Slave Act. If you read the Confederate Constitution in its entirety, you will find that it attempted to impose far more severe restraints on the individual states than did the U.S. Constitution. The whole ploy of “States Rights” was a propaganda piece created and promoted to bring Great Britain and France in on the side of the Confederacy.
It is certainly true that slavery was not the only point of contention, but it was the single salient point around which the South could rally. Note: the South did not secede because Lincoln (or the congress) imposed any terrible laws on the South; the South seceded because they feared that Lincoln and the new congressional majority might push for further restrictions on slavery.
Thank you. Not just for your informative post, but for stating the things that I had just spent 2 1/2 hours researching (which is something I do NOT do). Also, thank you for phrasing it in such a civil manner, while I was going to call Friedo a crybaby.
Do you seewhy so many people don’t bother to post in GD? You really just don’t need us.
I wanted to add that one group of scholarships that seems to be often overlooked in this particular debate are those sponsored by the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. While skin color is not specified in the requirements, anyone that reads them will realize a person of any color other than pinkish could not be awarded that particular scholarship. Also, the DAR/SAR have chapters in all 50 states, according to what I found today. It seems that these forms of aid are easily found. Anyone that is rejected by the UNCF on the basis of their lack of pigment might want to look into that.
My personal take on the whole affair is that the MANY scholarships are incredibly exclusionary. Unfortunately for people of color (once again), most are not in their favor. Of course, if anyone started a “National Scholarship Fund to Make Things Fair For Non-Whites,” people like Friedo (by the way, references to the slow brother from “the Godfather” are SOOOO amusing), would of course throw fits to the effect of: “We now need a ‘National Scholarship Fund to Make Things Fair for Whites.’” Ya can’t win sometimes. I mean, unless you’re white. Then you can go ahead and win and Friedo won’t attempt to publicly shame you.
I do have advice for anyone that Friedo might think is getting an easy ride: Stop being so not-white. I mean, really, what are you trying to pull? You’re evidently depriving Friedo of life and liberty. We won’t even start on how you’re keeping him from pursuing happiness.
I sleep better at night knowing Friedo is around covering all the bases for those of us that have some relative that watches “Hee-Haw,” but passes out drunk too early to really make a difference. I’m not just proud of being white, I’m proud to be white trash. Thanks, pal. I owe ya one. No, really.
I like to purposely incite these people. Subtle insults aimed at making them more and more agravated. Generally ruin their day. heheheheh.
I’d like to get a big rubber stamp with the word ‘pissant’ on it. This I would use daily, on people’s foreheads. Julius would have gotten one on each cheek too.
This conversation could have gone something like this:
“Me: I see. Then how do you explain the fact that we have training classes on how to take a promotional test that was conceived as a way to persuade the candidates that the system isn’t rigged?
Him: See! You’re even coaching the niggers!
Me: But Julius, the training classes are open to everybody, regardless of race.
Him: Oh, bullshit.”
Me: Hang on a sec… <pulling out stamp>
Him: What’s that?
Me: A cool magic trick. Here, close your eyes for a sec…
From the Simpsons episode “Much Apu About Nothing”:
Proctor: All right, here’s your last question. What was the cause of the Civil War?
Apu: Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from the obvious schism between the abolitionists and the anti-abolitionists, there were economic factors, both domestic and inter–
And as to Julius?
Anything you say to him would be worthless.
Just be grateful he’s sitting in a bar nursing his drink and his grudges.
And not sitting in an office building making decisions.
As others pointed out there are funds that limit themselves to “white” people. Also, the UNCF does not limit itself to “black people” but to people attending traditonally black colleges. Please tell me what is discriminatory about that? Ok, then shut up.
It’s OK, olscratch. Friedo is obviously not aware that organizations such as, say, Sons of Norway give out scholarships. If that’s not exclusively for whites I don’t know what is.
