Vaas’s bowling spell is worthy of posting his full name: Warnakulasuriya Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas.
Sadly, I don’t think Canada beating Bangladesh was much of an upset. Giving them Test status was a great mistake. I don’t even think Zimbabwe are genuinely competitive. Sri Lanka’s entry to the top level has been an aberation.
The Warne thing is interesting. If just about anyone else ran the line they took a banned substance to look thin at a press conference, no-one would beleive them. But Warnie - yeah, he could be that stupid. Charging him with the more serious offence could be his way out of this with no conviction.
Gentlemen, as some of you know, I’m going to be posted in Sri Lanka as of next month. Accordingly, my language teacher decided that today was the day I needed to learn about cricket. We watched the Sri Lanka/New Zealand match for an hour.
Damn if I know what I watched, but it was entertaining, at least. Thank you for your comments in this thread–you’ve made me understand what cricket means to some people.
After watching for an hour (15 overs ?), you must have understood something about the game ?
The ICC may have been a bit hasty giving Bangladesh test status too early. It’ll be interesting to see if they can salvage anything against Kenya.
Looks like South Africa’s lost one of their best players with Jonty Rhodes retiring link to story.
A couple of interesting games tonight, Australia v India and Canada v Kenya.
Can the Indian batsman finally fire against the defending champions? Will Canada draw level with Sri Lanka to top pool B?
Good to hear that False God is being shown the light by his language teacher…

I think it is unlikely that he will be suspended as he was charged with the more serious offence. If he was charged with the use of a diuretic, it would be an open and shut case. Now it has to be proven that he used steroids- and I have not heard any evidence of that.
They seem to beat England often enough. Oh, yeah, I see what you mean.
But Bangladesh’s record is just appalling. Tests: Played 17, won 0, lost 16, drawn 1 (a rainout). ODIs: Played 80, won 3, lost 77. Even some Bangladeshis are openly wondering whether their elevation was just a political move by Dalmaiya so that the subcontinent would have four voting Full Members and give the region more clout in the ICC. Zimbabwe didn’t get elevated until nine years after their first World Cup win in 1983, when they beat (ahem) Australia in the opening match. Bangladesh got it months after they beat Pakistan in perhaps the dodgiest of World Cup matches–even if it wasn’t thrown (and I don’t think it was, myself), Pakistan showed no will to win in a dead match. That match was the first and last time Bangladesh has beaten a Full Member side.
It’s official. India sucks.
Gyan9, I am so with you on that!! I think the Indian team should just pack their Luis Vuittons and come home. The Pakis are probably laughing right now!!
Commisserations, Gyan. Man, why does it seem like every other team turns into France when they play the Aussies? I know they’re good, but–the phrase “cheese-eating surrender monkeys” jumps to the fore.
Doesn’t look good at all for India. Harbajan and Kumble both looked threatening, but they need something to bowl at. They look unlikely to reach the Super Sixes.
Well, I wouldn’t be that pessimistic. And it’s not even a case of optimism.
Pool A is
Australia (guaranteed)
Namibia (guaranteed NOT)
Holland (guaranteed NOT)
Pakistan (guaranteed)
England (yeah, right)
India (maybe)
Zimbabwe (distant chance)
England/Zimbabwe are only true contenders against India. With Zimbabwe due to gain of 4 forfeited points, the main contender.
My prediction of point tally
Australia : 12 pts (win all)
Pakistan : 8 pts (win Nam, Hol, Eng, Zim)
India : 8 pts (win Pak, Zim, Nam, Hol)
England : 6 pts (win Ind, Nam, Hol)
Zimbabwe : 6 pts (win Eng, Nam, Hol)
We have the Indian captain Ganguly saying, “We did every thing right except putting runs on the board.”
The linked article says it’s sarcasm, I say it’s his head up his…
Double those point tallies, Gyan–for reasons I have never figured out, wins now count for four points apiece.
Also, it’s not a certainly that England is forfeiting those 4 points against the Zims. The ICC was still debating whether to force Zimbabwe to reschedule the match at a safer venue. (In which case it might be entirely possible that it’s Zimbabwe which is on the hook for the forfeit.)
So you could be seeing the Aussies on 24, and India, Pakistan and England all on 16. Looks like The Dread Run-Rate is going to make a return appearance.
BTW–Canada might be on the verge of upset number two!
Canada 197 all out, Kenya 41/1 from nine overs…
Kenya won by four wickets. India looked very average against the Aussies.
Australia look ominously good. Everyone else bar Sri Lanka looks fairly shaky from what I’ve seen.
Today sees South Africa take on New Zealand in a crucial pool B match, while England face Holland and Pakistan plays Namibia. AM off to pray for a kiwi victory…
 indeed.
He was charged with using a prohibited substance - the diuretic - rather than using a “prohibited method”, which is the charge that seems to be used if you use a drug because your doctor told you to.
Which prohibited drug he used doesn’t matter. A drug’s on the prohibited list or it’s not. If he’s stupid enough to use a masking agent and not even get a material benefit out of it (although I’m sure he looked great at his press conference), then he’s too stupid to play cricket for a couple of years.
Yeah, I know it’s off-topic, but…
In Australia a foreign exchange company has been running a series of ads that have been running during the world cup, putting Australia’s players in international colours under the concept that “there are some foreign exchanges we won’t make”. There are four ads in the series, and they’re worth a watch.
BigNik: Those adverts are hilarious! I especially like the one with poor old Glenn McGrath trying to rescue the Aussies from “9/177” against the Enzeds. Good to see he’s got a sense of humor!
…joins kiwiboy in prayer…
The odds are not in our favour, and we need a few things to go right for us. We need to bat first, and the big guns-Fleming, Astle, and woefully out of form McMillan have to get big scores-at least fourties. Cairns should go back to number six or seven-he is wasted when he comes in early. That fielding effort in the last game was extraordinary, it could have been the spark to lift our team that extra notch-but to come up against the South Africans after they have already had a loss at home does not good omens make…
