A Dance With Dragons - A release date? Could it be true?!

The next “Song of Ice and Fire” book is coming out July 12.

Could Martin actually live long enough to complete this series? Is it possible? Who knows?

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Psssst…

This is the first time George has said anything. I believe it. I think he only has 1 chapter left. Barring him being killed in the next week or two…

I merged Mahaloth’s thread into Daddypants’.

Well, it was one chapter, but it was getting long, so I had to divide it into five. That meant that I had to rearrange some stuff in the middle of the book, so I pulled out 15 chapters, and I’ve decided to split this book in half.

Not to mention, there’s done with the first draft of a book and then there’s edited. Whenever I hear him talk about his writing it reminds me of a 14 year old girl writing fanfic.

Which is why the release date is July and not April. Hell, it might have been edited concurrently.

July 12th of what year?

Years ago, I would have been thrilled to hear it. Now, with 2 more books still to be written before the series is complete, I don’t care much. I figure I’ll pick up all 3 of them when the last one is published. In 2031. I might need the large print edition by then.

Yeah, I actually quit after the 2nd one, waiting for the 4th one. I think I’ll just restart once it is all complete and if that never occurs, then I’ll just forget it.

I dont understand why anybody would still be waiting for this to come out?

It seems obvious to me that GRRM just isnt interested in his story any more. The last book was half-assed following a large delay. He has spent 6/7 seven years doing anything but write about ASOIAF. Just how good do people expect any new book to be?

I would wager it will read like fan fiction, written for the money by a guy who just doesnt care about it anymore.

All this news does for me is remind me that I need to start a thread for Steven Erikson, who just released the final book of MBOTF. Ten books, in just over ten years, just as promised. GRRM take note.

Because the previous 4 books were entertaining so we want more of that?

I’ve no idea how good it will be. It features a lot more of my favourite characters than Feast, so probably better than that. Really though what else the Author has been doing has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the book. It could be fantastic and it could be shit only time will tell for certain. But I’ve liked virtually everything I’ve read of GRRMs so I’m going to look forward to him releasing pretty much any book.

It’s all a matter of taste, of course, but I’d rather wait 6 years for Dance, assuming it’s anywhere near the quality of the previous books, than read anything of Erikson’s.

I found the last book to be pointless and rambling, with GRRM just putzing around with some minor characters who did not advance the story in any way. I no longer care what happens to any of them.

Really? I think it could be he’s gone through a phase where he wasn’t interested in the story anymore, but perhaps he has come back to it? Renewed his interest? Have you ever been involved in anything that you lost interest in and re-found that interest years later?

I don’t understand the venom about this. I do understand the “I’ll believe it when I see it” stuff, but how it seems “obvious” to anyone that GRRM just isn’t interested anymore is something I don’t agree with.

A plausible scenario can be seen that GRRM was a writer who lost direction & passion for his story, but starts to rediscover it when HBO buys the rights to produce a show based on the books. It’s well documented that he’s quite involved in the show & has spent time on the set. Maybe seeing the characters brought to life has sparked his desire to get back to the story. Maybe seeing the sets has jogged his imagination. Maybe Head Coach Rex Ryan promising a Jets Super Bowl win has inspired him. Maybe he looked over his whole life and has changed his attitude about everything…like marrying his longtime girlfriend a month ago.

I don’t know the man, but taking a glance of his behavior in the past 6 months, it seems to me like a guy who is into it again. I choose to be optimistic. I may not bank on the story being finished in the next 3 years, but I’m starting to think that it will be finished after all, and probably sooner than I would have thought a year (or five) ago.

This.

I can understand people getting ticked when they want to know what happens ASAP, and the book keeps getting delayed, but I’d rather wait 10 years for a great book than get a mediocre one every year. (This is why I stopped reading Piers Anthony years ago). The best stories unfold at the pace they were meant to, IMHO. Whether GRRM is interested in the writing of it or not, this is how long it took. The only way to know if it’s good or not, and indirectly, if he cared or not, is to read it.

As a Wild Cards fan, when the first new book in 7 years came out, my reaction was “Sweet, a new Wild Cards book!”, not “What took so damn long? GRRM and his crew must not have cared, I’m sure it’ll be crap.”
