Glad to have won a convert. If you have any more questions, feel free to give me a yell. I agree with you that the Penguin is one of Batman’s saner villains - definitely not Arkham Asylum material.
I’m gonna apply too, as soon as I figure out who I want to play. I can’t even decide if I want to be a hero or a villain.
EDIT: About feeding Batman the answer to the riddles… do you (collective you) ever do it the other way, so there’s a challenge in the gaming aspect as well? Have a hero try to figure out the villain’s plan on his own and see if he manages to stop it?
Well, who are your favorite DC types?
I have done it the other way once or twice - you just have to be flexible and willing to bend the plot to accommodate the directions the players come up with. I find that the approach where I tell people what to expect works better for me, because what I enjoy most is the particular story beats and reveals, which can be hard to hit if the players don’t know to look for them.
And then, of course, there are scenes that aren’t part of plots, so you can just have fun dialogue-based interaction amongst the characters.
And now i see you meant the collective you - I know other players prefer different approaches and do it different ways. Some folks don’t run many plots at all. Some like the big secrets. Some take a hybrid approach.
Little bit of an addendum - our Batman player informed me she has a journal already created for the Penguin - she had thought about applying for him, but didn’t want to play Batman AND one of his nemeses. She’d be willing to give that to a successful Penguin applicant…
Oh really? Ok, then I will start working on the application in ernest. I have had some RL stuff going on the last few days (holliday weekend and all that) so I had decided not to really rush the application. But if there is someone who might actually be waiting for the role to get used I will hurry up putting together a sample post.
Any pointers as far as sample posts go?
Well, sorry I wasn’t checking the SD board avidly, but I saw what you sent us, and it looks great. We’ll try to get back to you shortly.
woohoo! Hopefully the other mods agree with you, I am looking forward to getting started.
Anyone else gonna join me?
I hope we can lure in another one or two…
Do I have to have a LJ account to join? That might be a showstopper for me. I need to read some more (just came across this thread now so I’m starting cold), but if you allow villians, I’d be interested in Black Adam (to keep with the JSA theme) or a Legionnaire (Wildfire and Timber Wolf are my favorites). I figure is Star Boy can end up in the JSA, so can Wildfire from the same era.
Well, I have something else to read in my limited downtime now!
You don’t have to have a personal LJ - but you’d need to create one for the character. Of course, we can help with that. The LJ accounts are ad-supported at the most basic level, and thus, are free. Or is it some other objection to LJ?
Black Adam’s open, and ruling Kahndaq, though he’s run into a bit of trouble recently - trying to stop Mordru from stealing the power of Shazam.
Interesting you should mention the Legionnaires, though. They’re currently doing a guest-star stint in one of our plots - though it’s the post-ZH Legion. In our continuity, Brainy, Triad and Lyle have been stuck in the 21st century for a while, and… Oh, heck, I should just link the Wiki page I wrote.

And the rest of the Legion has begun to show up - as Mordru’s mind-controlled minions. Andromeda and M’onel have both appeared, so far…
Oooh! Can I play Batman-Man? A second-rate superhero who believes he’s Batman?! (quote: “I’m Batman!”) With all kinds of stuff on his utility belt, including a swiss army knife, a radar detector, bug spray, A1 steak sauce, handcuffs, more handcuffs, choke chain, crotch noose (err… maybe this gag is going to a very uncomfortable place and I should stop now), flashlight, two-way radio, cellphone because no on uses radios anymore, can of crisco, can of spam, Cheese-Nips, and Bat Shark Repellant? With a secret lair located in the nearest mini-mall, with all kinds of stuff with the Bat logo on it?! (Bat-computers on sale, only $999.95 plus tax!)
No.
Besides, I already did most of that schtick while playing Ambush Bug…
Just a little update for the curious who expressed some interest in the Riddler stuff I had going on - that plotline has now concluded, and may be viewed in it’s entirety :
