A Disillusioned Republican!

Your opinion, not mine. I think he was great for NYC and rescued it from the disaster that Dinkins was. He cleaned up the city in every way possible. He was far from perfect. but he did a great job. Obviously YMMV.

Please Lord who I do not believe in, preserve us from such a fate.

Jim

Such words should be met with a fate that not even I can dream up.
Then again, if we’re longing for THESE days, you’re probably swimming in cash in the first place and could care less who’s president.

Sweet dreams, all.

Daniel

I never knew you had such a dark streak. I will probably have nightmares about an Undead Cheney with Rumsfeld as Renfield chasing me tonight. I am sure Ashcroft and Rove will somehow figure into it also. Sweet Dreams indeed.
Things will get better, things will get better, things will get better, things will get better Auntie Em. Ho Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo. Things will get better, things will get better, things will get better, things will get better
Okay, I can breathe again. **Daniel ** if what you suggested above comes to pass than everything **Der Trihs ** says about America is probably true and I cannot accept this possibility. **Der Trihs ** has to be wrong.

Jim (Actually Ashcroft looks more like the Vampire and Cheney like a Bond Villain)

Dreams come hard on a stone pillow.

“Do you, Mel Gibson, solemnly swear to execute the office of the President of the United States…”

Back in 1994, I believed in the Republicans. I thought they were the best thing for America. I never joined the party, being poor and not much of a joiner, but they could count on my vote.

In 2000 I cast my first vote for Bush. I believed Gore would be a terrible president. Maybe so, but given a chance to go back in time now, I’d vote for him. Not like it would matter, as my state went to Gore anyway.

Bush and the republican trifecta basically made to fear and loathe the republican party and viewpoint, particulary after 9/11 where everyone who disagreed was told to shut up because…9/11! Terrorists! Godless Gays!

Bush Lost my vote in 2004 but Kerry didn’t get it either, being such as wiener.

Just yesterday, however, I voted Democrat for Both Senators, something I’ve never done. I’d like nothing better then to see the dems take congree again, if for no other reason then to create a nice big bit of gridlock.

I dislike the idea of laws. It bothers me that we have 535 people whose full-time job is to come up with new restrictions to put on us, and they better make lots of them or they might get fired. That said, if I could pass just one law it would be the abolishment of established political parties. What purpose do they serve us, the people? They’re to the benefit of politicans only.

I’ve always been socially liberal. I used to be extremely fiscally conservative, too, which shut me out of both major parties and forced me to vote Libertarian (read: it took my voting privelge away.) When Bush proved to me that “conservatives” are going to spend our money anyway - albeit on wars and such rather than evil stuff like socialized healthcare - I started moving towards the center on fiscal issues.

I’m registered as an independent, but I’m voting a party line this time around. Come November, it’s Democrat or bust. I only wish that dog McCain was up for review so I could vote against him.

Hister.

No, they allow like minded people to coalesce their power. Otherwise, nothing would get done because you would have 5 different opinions on a piece of legislation. The people in the parties hash out their differences, for the most part, before legislation is put up for vote. This way, legislation they like is not defeated over niggling.

Oh give me a break. Don’t equate not liking the candidates, which most of us have not got 2 election cycles now, with being oppressed. This country has a sad history of denying suffrage to minorities and women, then intimidating the same when suffrage was won. You have a case of the softy american whines. Don’t be that guy.

Why would you register? Is it mandatory in your state?

I disagree, but it’s purely my opinion and we probably won’t ever agree.

It was dry humor. Do you also think that I believe wars are fine and dandy but socialized healthcare is evil?

There are states where you can vote without registering?

No, but there are states where you can register without choosing a party affiliation. I believe that’s his (her?) point.

That’s exactly what I did. I’m registered “independent” - non-party affiliated.

So when you register to vote you have to say whay party you support? But you are given the option to choose “independant”?

No, you have to say what party you support, but you are given the choice to say “no party affiliation.” “Independent” means the same thing but it’s easier to type. Where is the confusion coming from? We’re not talking quantum physics here.

I feel like Claudius did; the only way to "reform’ this rotten, corrupt mess is to let it collapse! We can build a new, better system on the ruins of the old:
-for starters, we can:
-limit terms
-reduce Congress to a 6-month session/year.

  • confine the courts to interpreting the laws (not writing laws)
    -freeze tax rates
-withdraw from all foreign military alliances
-negotiate trade deals on the basis of RECIPROCITY
    -reform tort laws
We NEED a TOTAL meltdown of the present system. Once the old mess has been destroyed, we can get down to business!

Ralph, we could do all those things. We just don’t really want to.

Right. And the quote refers to another leader who can to the same realization as **ralph124c **(and I, during my most cynical moments). When the country becomes so apathetic and disillusioned that they won’t move to remove an obviously corrupt and terrible ruling class, then the only thing for the ruler (who actually loves his country, but is trapped by the system himself) to do is to get worse. Increase corruption, increase the infringement on civil liberties, increase the bribery and the scandal and the anti-social behavior. Let all the poisons that are lurking, hidden, in the mud of politics swell and grow and hatch out like millions of little fish eggs until we’re choking on the caviar. Then, and only then, when our own indolence becomes uncomfortable, will people rise up and overthrow the tyrants, creating a new and better world.

I think I want it on a t-shirt.

Let all the poisons that lurk in the mud hatch out!

It’s not. The only thing the Democrats are saying is “We’re not Republicans”. I haven’t seen anything come out of them that looks like a coherent plan for anything else.

You have a point, but with the current Admin and the many Religious Righters polluting our party, I am pretty sure the Democrats saying “We’re not Republicans" might be their best message. Sad that we have reached this point again. This is how Carter won, was pretty much on that platform.

Jim

You’re not a conservative. You’re a dangerous radical.

Go ahead, keep dreaming your utopian dreams. Meanwhile those of us on the left will carry on with the business of cleaning up the mess that you and your kind have made.
