A&E's Lathe of Heaven YUCK!!!

WARNING!!! This thread contains spoilers, so if you’re one of those pansy-assed people who hates 'em, leave now!!!
In 1979 my parents had been divorced for about two years. Mom and I didn’t have much money, so we rarely went out and did things. Mostly we stayed at home. One night, flipping through the channels, my ten year old self stumbles onto The Lathe of Heaven. Star Wars has made me a science fiction geek, so I watch anything that has to do with science fiction in it. The Lathe of Heaven is the most amazing mindfuck I’ve seen since I caught the broadcast showing of 2001: A Space Odyessy as a very young kid (maybe four or so). I have no idea what the hell this movie’s about, all I know is that’s its the coolest, most fucked up thing I’ve ever encountered. It’s reran a couple of times over the next few years and I always make sure to catch it. When Dr. Faber has psyche destroying experience with the Augmentor, my ass is plastered right up against the television screen, basking in its eerie glow.

As I’m growing up, I have flashbacks to that movie, and it’s weird dream-like quality. Ten years ago, a buddy of mine, who is working at the local PBS station calls me up and tells me that he’s found videotapes of the show and would I be interested in watching it? Hell fucking yeah! I show up at his place and there, on the floor are the one inch master video tapes that he’s pulled a VHS copy from. We pop the tape into the VCR and watch the film. I then understood why I liked LSD and pot, both drugs gave me the same weird waking dream feeling that the movie does. There were all kinds of things in the film that I’d forgotten. It was like viewing the film for the first time all over again, and the rush was just as good this time as the last. And when the film came out on DVD, I just had to have a copy!

So when I heard that A&E was remaking the film, I was a little nervous. I’ve never read the book, for fear that it would spoil the film for me. Still, a remake could be a good thing. After all, they had a paltry quarter of a million or so to make the film with the first time, and a new production would have a vastly larger budget. Plus, this film had James Caan, an outstanding actor IMHO.

The A&E version of the film begins to deviate from the original almost immediately. Not in an annoying way, I’ll admit. It does introduce an interesting character at the beginning who certainly shows a lot of promise. Sadly, however, the film begins to rapidly fall apart once George Orr enters therapy. Caan isn’t the meglomaniac therapist that Kevin Conway is, he’s just sort of there. Shockingly missing from the remake however, are the sea turtle aliens, the sequence where everyone turns gray, and the apocalyptic ending. Instead, we have a film where George Orr is upset because he’s dreamed away Heather Lelache, and Dr. Haber uses George Orr’s abilities for reasons we’re not really clear on.

Thanks, Hollywood, for fucking up another wonderful masterpiece. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go and watch the original to remember why this story has had such a powerful impact on my life.

I agree with you. I thought the most disturbing part of the first version was how everything would change and no one would notice. Last night’s barely touched on that - unless it did more than half way through, since I only lasted that far. I could not work up enough interest to watch the rest of the production.

The most bizarre aspect of A&E’s version was that Ambien, a sleep inducing medication, was a chief sponsor.

Has Lisa Bonet always been that bad an actress? She sounded stoned in every scene she was in. After seeing this and some of her other recent work, wow, is that ever someone getting by on looks alone.

Big disappointment of a film, even for cable TV.

So you’re saying that the original version isn’t available anymore? Don’t like the remake, don’t watch it again; stick with the one you liked.

Actually, both filmed versions were less-than-perfect interpretations of Le Guin’s novel; I hope you’ve read it. The new film was definitely the more lame, though. At the 90-minute mark I realized they were going to leave out the aliens.

Ursula LeGuinn rocks!

I wish for a good production of The Dispossessed!

I also wish for money, power, and sex. To the same effect.

Wow, I have never seen either versions. But now I know that the first version goes well with a little “chicken & ranch dressing”. Thanx for the tip, hopefully I’ll get a chance to see it.

Tuckerfan, the way you describe this movie reminds me of Flash Gordon for some reason…

Actually, you have seen the original version and it totally unhinged you, dude. Or don’t you remember it? (You kept running screaming from your apartment and I’d have to stop the movie until you’d calmed down enough to watch the next part, only to run screaming again.)

Oh yeah !:stuck_out_tongue:
Yeah I remember I’ll never be the same again after seeing that. ok. That movie caused me to have some pretty intense flash backs. I can’t wait to see it again. Just bring the original over, I don’t often trust A&E to do a good job.

Great novella, interesting movie (the original, that is), lousy remake.

But the original is indeed currently available on both VHS and DVD. Check out Movies Unlimited.

They made Lathe of Heaven into a movie? I’ve got to see that.

Well… (checks thread)… maybe I’ve got to see the FIRST version.

elucidator I think there’s too much Disposessed to make a good film out of without wrecking it. I’d pay money to see a good Left Hand of Darkness though.
By the way, who are A&E, so I can avoid them?

A&E is a cable network that used to only be good for two things: Law and Order reruns and NewsRadio reruns. Now it’s just good for the NewsRadio reruns.

That should make it particularly easy for me to avoid them then

A&E did a pretty good series of adaptations of the Horatio Hornblower novels. The Nero Wolfe series was pretty good too.

But I agree that their version of Lathe of Heaven sucked.

I too saw the original when it was first on (in '79 I was about 7 or 8), and I too was completely mindfucked by it. I hadn’t heard about the remake, but I’d certainly like to see the original again. I’ll keep my eyes open for it.

Hrrm seems like I won’t be catching a rerun of lathe of heaven now :frowning:

Oh well, Wild Palms it is

Dammit, Tuckerfan, stop rubbing your butt on the TV!
