I disagree with gum. I would say that money is definitely one of the main causes. Ever since the days of Cruyff and even before then, the Dutch footballers have been very sensitive when it comes to anything having to do with money.
In 1974 Cruyff refused to wear the Adidas shirts with three stripes, since he had a contract with Puma. So, he got to wear a shirt with two stripes on the sleeves. Then three days before the World Cup started the players threatened strike actions because they thought the bonuses were too low! With the Dutch, money is a very large motivating factor.
Also, I don’t condone Rijkaard’s spitting at Völler either (they call Rijkaard “the camel” in Germany), but I’m sure that Völler must have said something (most likely racist) first. Völler basically grew up in the working calss parts of Hanau, which are not exactly known for their openness and friendliness to foreigners.

Yikes. We were lucky to get away with 1-1, although in fairness, we obviously watched two teams that won’t win the championship, tonight.
Why Davids was taken off? No clue. Ask Dickie. I think he was doing all right. But no Dutch player truly excelled. And I’m damn glad they didn’t field Schweinsteiger from the start, that kid’s damn dangerous. Perhaps it could have been a different result had Van Nistelrooy scored so early in the match, or if Van der Vaart had gotten that cross shot in. But all in all, 1-1 was a fair result for the quality of the match. Which was mediocre from both sides.

Tell me about it, I’m having shocking luck in this tournament with my bets. Yesterday, as well as backing Holland, I laid Czech Republic (i.e. backed any result other than Czech win) on Betfair, with 20 mins left and them losing 1-0. I thought they might get one back, but 2? No chance, I thought. So after placing my bet I got in the car and drove down to my girlfriend’s house… no sooner was I on the motorway than I put the radio on and heard the Czech Republic score their second.
