My favourite Pleat moment - apart from the jig wearingg beige shoes, was him offering a woman police officer £30 for a nosh. A school boy error - they only cost a score in Kings Cross.
We’ve just paid him £150,000 as a bonus - christ knows what for.
The last two posts mention both Pleat and Steffan Freund - my but we’ve come a long way in a short time!
Well, we’re playing Jamaica on November 17 in Columbus, Ohio. It will be cold, could even be snowflakes there that time of year. Jamaica is probably the second best team in the group and is currently tied for second. Even resting some of the older or European based players I think it’s a good chance the USA will still come away with at least one point (they’ve not lost in their last twelve matches, going back to their 1-0 away loss to Netherlands in a friendly). I just expect a younger, mainly MLS based team. We’ve beaten Mexico in Mexico City (a big feat) with a similar team a few years back during a Gold Cup tournament, IIRC. It’s probably in our best interest to eliminate Jamaica since they seem to play us well most times.
“One Ayegbeni Yakubu, There’s only one Ayegbeni Yakubu,
One Ayegbeni Yakubu, There’s only one Ayegbeni Yakubu…”
Spurs take their rightful place below Manchester United.
5 goals scored in 9 games. What’s your new chant going to be? “One-nil to the Spurs in two-leg matches?”
And yes it’s Steffan. I tried various spellings and they all looked wrong - but I wasn’t about to google the man who made Peter Storey look like a playmaker.
Jamaica has never defeated the USA. I see no reason for that to start soon. I’d sure like to see Edson Buddle and Eddie Johnson up top with Donovan, Beasly, and Eddie Gaven behind them. I think they’d do more than just put up a fight.
It’s always a delight to travel down to Fratton Park - a local club for local people. God it’s a dump. And that endless bell-ringing doesn’t help.
Good to see someone in Hong Kong supporting Man Utd - there’s nothing as refreshing as having a stereotype reinforced.
Steffan Freund has won the European Cup you know.
Am I alone in finding it just a bit iffy that twice now Chelsea have had an overpaid player they can’t shift in open revolt with the club, and then that player fails a drug test? Or am I being paranoid? (In my experience if every footballer with a fondness for Gianluca Vialli was banned we’d be playing players from the Screwfix leagues as all the others would be out)
The love affair goes back a long time before I came out here, to 1967, in fact, when I got my first George Best replica shirt. Hardly state of the art in those days. My Mum had to sew on the No. 11.
When I was studying at Lancaster, the first season of the Premiership, I went to Old Trafford for the first time. In those days, there was no need to be a member or season-ticket holder, but it could be touch and go if you didn’t get there early. Since United were playing Wimbledon, I thought there’d be no problem, but the sold-out notices were up when I got to the ground.
Wanting to soak up a bit of the atmosphere, i was walking around the perimeter when I was approached by a copper.
“Who you support?” he asked.
“I’m a neutral,” I said, sesnign an opportunity.
He took out a wad of tickets and gave me one for the Wimbledon section. I was a bit worried I might betray myself when United scored, but there was nothing to worry about on that front, as Wimbledon won 1-0.
But United went on to win the title for the first time since I bought that first shirt.
It sounds like you’ve both come a long way - and there will always be plenty of other Man Utd fans in Hong Kong you can talk to. It’s just in Stretford that they’re a bit thin on the ground!
As you mention Wimbledon you may like to know that they have been knocked out of the FA cup by Thurrock. It is quite something to go and watch AFC wimbledon play Corinthian Casuals and realise that both sides have won the FA cup.
(I have played in a team that has beaten a team that has won the FA cup - Old Etonians are not such a force these days)
THis is from Spurs’ official site and has caused a fearsome debate amongst us Spurs fans. As I know you all have the misfortune to support teams other than the Lillywhites, I’d be interested to hear your views…
>>>>>The chanting of ‘Yidds and Yiddo’s’
As part of our commitment to kicking racism out of football, the Club is
currently taking part in a national anti-racism week of action. As many
supporters will be aware, the terms ‘Yidds’ and ‘Yiddo’s’ are chanted and
sung regularly at White Hart Lane. Last season several Spurs supporters and
the anti racism organisation Lets Kick Racism Out of Football contacted the
Club directly regarding this issue because of the racial connotations
attached to both terms.
Having canvassed the opinions of supporters on a number of issues recently
including improvements to this season’s Season Ticket and Club Membership
packages, the Club would like to ask for your feedback again on the issue of
chanting and singing of ‘Yidds and Yiddo’s’. We would be grateful if you
could read the examples of the views we have received and then vote
according to your view.
Thank you for your feedback.

“Chanting ‘yidds’ and ‘yiddo’s’ should not be stopped as they are part of
the Club’s identity. They’re used affectionately as a term of endearment and
a sense of belonging at Tottenham, certainly not as an insult.”

"I brought my son to the Lane for the first time and was then called to his
school as he had chanted the word ‘yid’ and offended other students. It’s
quite clear that the terms ‘yidds’ and ‘yiddo’s’ are racist in any location
and so should not be encouraged. As has been shown with my son, Children are
particularly unaware of the term’s meaning outside of White Hart Lane and
the use of it could cause serious offence
Has Buddle ever suited up for the National side? I expect we’ll see Brian Ching instead, or perhaps Casey Conor. Ching’s okay, but I don’t much care for Conor, so I’d be fine with Buddle there.
I’ve just been told that Bill Nicholson Has died. The last of the old-time legends has gone.
I am terribly sad about this - he really was a lovely bloke, I met him many times as both a man and a boy and he always had time to talk to the ordinary fan.
He still lived 5 minutes walk away from White Hart Lane with his wife of 60 years.
I think he has 2 or 3 caps. It wasn’t in any meaningful situation, but he has played for the national team. Since we’re already qualified for the next round I expect we’ll see an interesting lineup. The game being in Columbus leads me to believe that Buddle and/or Martino will play. However there might be some worry about them needing rest is the Crew goes far into the playoffs.
He was thoroughly (and rightly) pissed off by the crap that we put out on the pitch. Also what could he have added to that already said by Jennings, McKay, Greaves, Perryman, Chivers etc etc? Just the usual preprepared souless pap that is representative of modern football.
As to the game: I have never cared less about a result than on Saturday - but Bolton are a well organised team that play some nice football, so they did deserve their win. We’ve got them again on Wednesday - hopefully we’ll turn up for that.
Should be a good game. Shame that I’m in Dublin and it isn’t televised. I really hope that we take the game seriously and put out a full strength squad.
I thought i’d bump this up again as a fair bit has happened since the last post (and I am as bored as a bored thing from boringshire).
So the burning issues are:
Arsenal V Man Utd - why can’t they both lose? and what will happen in the league cup game?
Tottenham: The soap opera continues. However I think we now have the hardest manager in the Premiership. Who would win a fight between Jol and Allardyce?
Who is the hardest footballer EVER?
Who has turned out to be any good from the beginning of the season and who has flopped?
Man Utd and the filth: The spat is like watching Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden having a row. You just want them both to get hurt.
The filth are looking a bit more vulnerable than they were; however I am far from confident about Saturday.
Jol would do Allardyce. I remeber Jol having a fight with Tony Galvin when Jol played for WBA and by golly, he looked a bit handy. Only Ian Holloway in the league could beat him (after a title eliminator against Souness)
Hardest player ever - Dave McKay - the rest can just bugger off.
Good for Spurs: Defoe; Mendes; Edman; Davis; King;
Can sodd off to West Ham: Davies; Gardener; Jackson; Atouba.
Worth their “wages” for Manchester United: Ronaldo, Ferdinand, Heinze
Transfer to Tottenham: Phil Neville, Kleberson, Djemba-Djemba
Free transfer to City: Giggs
Time to put out to pasture: Keane
Should come good: Rooney
