However, IDBB’s racist cant has really gotten under my skin this time.
The reason why she begins these threads Aries28 and then bows out out is directly related to her failure to accept responsibilty IRL.
If you question her at all, rather then defending her position, she refuses to continue the dialogue.

I’m not going to comment on the last addition to the thread by the OP. Others are going to, and they will no doubt cover anything needing to be said.
My point is that even if you have a college degree, or hell, a master’s degree, Spanish would still be a highly marketable skill if you live in Texas.
Surely with crossborder trade, it might be a good idea to know the language of the people with whom you are doing business. And while the majority of those with whom you will be doing business are very fluent in English, there may be some whom are not.
It is my belief that learning a language is one of the things that you can do to make yourself more marketable regardless of education level and career choice.

wring, I know, I wanted to add to that,since I feel that it really does bear repeating. I really wanted to make my point on the crossborder traffic since it seems that some like the OP consider knowledge of Spanish to be useful only in a purely blue collar field, whereas I think that it can be marketable even on a white collar level.
I just don’t get how some people, such as the OP, can be so agressively ignorant. Of course, I may be wrong about the OP and she is not as ignorant as she appears to be.
Brujo, I think you are right about her aggressive ignorance. I called it willful ignorance before, but I think aggressive is more accurate. This language thing is part of her modus operandi; she has been complaining about the same thing virtually since she got here, steadfastly refusing to amend her own behavior and attitude while at the same time continually blaming everybody else.
As to the second language thing, I’m graduating soon with my BA in business and I fully intend to go back and learn Spanish after I graduate, because I recognize the importance of a functional second language in the white-collar world. I only wish she did.
harking back a lil bit, i just wanna clear up the source of my rant. i’m not a racist, bigot or otherwise. i just happen to live in the uk, a country with a national language (english). i’m not asking economic/political migrants etc to speak the language as they go thru customs. what i am asking is for them to at least try. i know a lot do, but in my retail jobs i have encountered those who just dont even try.
take for example a garden store i worked at. now, someone came in with a defective product, and he actually refused to speak english to me (i’d heard him speaking thickly accented yet understandable english to another member of staff). the product had nothing to do with me selling it to him, he just must’ve taken a dislike to me cos all he did was rant at me in another language when we were out of whatever the fuck it was he wanted. i showed him something similar, and he yells at me point blank (deafening) and walks out of the store. fuck you. yell at stock control, not me pal…
another example. the mcdonalds (ah, that wonderful place) i worked at had a lot of foreign peeps come in during summer. you could hear that a lot of em were trying, really trying to get across what they wanted in english, and they were understandable (even the 6 year old japanese kids we had in sometimes). but then you’d get the odd one of two who wouldnt make any effort at all to help you (not even pointing at the menu item), then get quite animatedly pissed off when you cant understand a word of what they are saying… that really pissed me off, that they were trying to making me feel small for only speaking my own country’s language…
i guess i’m just a bitter and twisted old (young) man…
