Satchel is named after Satchel Paige , one of the most famous negro league baseball stars and national league stars ever.
Bucky is named after Buck O’Neil , the famous Kansas City Monarch Negro League baseball star. Buck is alive an well in his 90’s and is considered a local treasure in the Kansas Ciy area. He is very involved with the KC Royals baseball team. I’ve met him twice and found his generous and open spirit to be a polar opposite of the Bucky in the comic strip.
He and satchel were the best of friends and he shared a few very funny stories of their escapades.
O’Neil’s take on Get Fuzzy is “I don’t read the comics and I heard that the cat is nothing like me.” Apparently he wasn’t angry that his name was chosen but he wasn’t honored either.
I’ve read some Frazz and it’s funny. But it’s drawn too much like Calvin and the little kid is too much like Calvin and the humor is too much like Calvin.
It’s an omelet with ham, peppers, onions and cheese, sometimes called a Western omelet. Pig is so stupid he thinks Denver is a company that makes the omelets.
My paper just starting carrying “Pearls Before Swine” and I’ve been trying to figure out if I like it or not. Yesterday’s “Would you care for a cup of coffee?” one finally won me over.
You poor lost soul.
You missed not only Rat threatening the neightbor with an ICBM, but Pig trying to find his stolen Nativity scene. He knocks on doors and asks “Have you found Jesus?”
You missed Rat dying and telling St. Peter he was Mother Theresa.
Peter: What did you do on Earth?
Rat: Those poor leopards.
My favorite thing about “Get Fuzzy” is the subtle baseball references. “Satchel”, “Bucky” and especially, “Fungo”. If I were going to vote for a piece of sporting equipment that most resembles a ferret, “fungo bat” would be my first choice:)
