A gift for my Best Man (and for the Pastor)?

I’m getting married very soon. I have no gift for my only attendant, nor for the officiant.

My Best Man has everything he needs. Knives, flasks, engraved crap, etc.

My priest has everything everyone ever thought of, since he’s been doing this for a while.

Any ideas? What did a doper give his best man, or his officiant? Something cool, but off-the-beaten-path?

Usually, the best thing to give the Pastor is an envelope with cash. If you’re not sure what to give, ask the church council chairman. For the groom, you want to give a gift that will remind him of you every time he uses it. Pick a gift that will represent an interest that you both share. Every time he looks at it, it should bring a smile to his face, knowing that he helped you take an important step in your life.

For the Best Man, a bridesmaid. For the priest, an altar boy.

I’ve occasionally gotten tips after performing weddings ($20-$50), along with the singers and organist, but usually it’s just a thank you and the standard payment through the wedding arrangers. Of course, I’ve typically never met the couple before the wedding day, so if you have longer relationship with your pastor, perhaps something personal would be in order. A framed photo of you and your spouse? If you’ve known him for a long time, how about something from your youth?

And yojimboguy, I’ll take a bridesmaid, too, thankyouverymuch.

Priests can be hard to buy for. Religious stuff is done to death. If you know any particular interest he has, that can be easier. I’ve had priest friends who collected antique baptismal certificates (especially the very ornate ones) or who liked really good port wine (he drank other stuff, but he loved a good port) or who baked his own bread. Basically, these guys I’d buy for as a friend. One of my best friends is a priest and he won’t let me buy him anything. He says it would make him happier if I spent the money on myself. sigh But he doesn’t buy me anything, either. For special occasions he will offer Mass for my special intention. For your priest, I’d say cash, with maybe a restaurant gift certificate.

For the best man - that’s harder. You want it to be more than something he’ll toss in the top drawer of his dresser and never look it. It’s hard without knowing the guy.

For my minister - a box of very good cigars (I happened to know he enjoyed cigars).

For my best man - four very good tickets to a Cubs-Cardinals game at Wrigley Field. (So he could take his wife and two boys)
