The Cactus Cuties with their rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Awesome!
I had the fortune, during one of my college visits a few months ago, to practice with a group on that record, The University of Rochester’s Midnight Ramblers. They’re all
They’ve got a lot of great stuff on youtube, but the sound quality doesn’t do them justice.
Tonya, Oy!, AHunter3 and Chanteuse: all good stuff!
As neat as the performance in the OP is, there’s something that just doesn’t feel right about a choir where every member has a microphone. The balance is determined by the sound mixer, rather than by the singers and the choir director. There seems to be an over-reliance on microphones these days, and singers no longer learn how to project.
A couple of years ago, my wife and I were lucky enough to see the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir, AKA Le Mystere des voix Bulgares, at the St. John of Rigla church in Chicago. We got there early and were dead center up front. There was no sound system at all, and it was one of the most astonishing musical experiences of my life. Twenty-four women singing full-throated not twenty feet from us, we could feel our bodies vibrate in sympathy, and some of the songs were so beautiful that we had tears in our eyes. These women can project. Back in the 90s, we saw the same group at the Park West in Chicago, and they managed to fill a venue that can hold 900 people.
I have to admit something a little sad: I first heard (and loved) this arrangement through the computer game Homeworld. The game came with a soundtrack (who knows where it is now), and I can remember listening to this quite a lot. Thanks for posting it.
How about some more barbershop? You can’t miss the Westminster Chorus!
Hey, great music is wherever you find it. I was incredibly lucky enough to first encounter this particular Agnus Dei when I was going to sing it, but most of the things in this thread are completely new to me, and so beautiful.
