A "herf" of cigar smokers?

I’ve heard that a group of cigar smokers is referred to as a “herf,” but I’ve no idea why. It doesn’t even approximate any existing word, as with “a murder of crows,” or “a parliament of rooks.” Does anybody know why a group of cigar smokers is called a “herf”?
