A how do you pronounce question

How do you pronounce the last name “Sajer” as in Guy Sajer, author of The Forgotten Soldier? He was (hmm…, might still be alive, I suppose) of French and German descent, and after all that worry about Lynux, I’m just not sure. I’m wondering about the “j” of course.

Since Guy is a French name and the book was originally published in French as “Le Soldat Oublié” IIRC, I have always pronounced his name as Ghee Sah-zhay. Terrific book by the way.

Just for kicks, I ran it through AT&T’s text to voice and it came up sager.

Patrick, thanks, you’ve helped me feel more confident in my pronounciation. I had suspected that was right, but I knew a Stajer who pronounced their name Stae-yer. You know how it is when some things are in your purview solely through reading and you’ve never heard any one else actually say it.]

Ask anyone here how MPSIMS is pronounced.

You’re right about the book; a compelling read that will stick with you.

And welcome to the board.

A postscript occurs to me now. It’s been a couple of eons since I studied French, but wouldn’t one somehow honor the “r” at the end? Perhaps Ghee Sah-zhayr?

Yeah, I think you’re right there. I ought to know that on this board getting into the ballpark sometimes is’nt enough.
