A lifelong Hawaii resident gets snippy about the Merrie Monarch Festival

I was lucky enough to be there on one of the farmer’s market days. Holy crap, what superb ginger i bought to take home. (Most fruits aren’t allowed to travel to the mainland. Different agricultural diseases. But clean ginger is okay.) I was disappointed by dragon fruit, but passion fruit, which looks disgusting, was amazing.

I really want to do back to Hawaii. Maybe if my husband’s treatment goes well, and he can drop to monthly hospital visits we can go again.

But I’ll have to hit you up about how to buy coconuts. I was only able to find them at touristy places, where they cost more than they cost at the Indian market here in the Northeast. (Although i bought a lot anyway, because the quality was immensely higher than what i can buy here.)

ANZAC day was yesterday. One of the big cultural touchstones of our nation. And yes, the parade and service was televised, because people watch it. It is/was traditionally and historically an occasion for drunkenness and gambling, but they don’t show that part of the cultural tradition on TV
