You do understand the difference between the Christian establishment (in this case the catholic church and its offspring, the orthodox and anglican churches) and Christian people, right? The catholic church certainly does not speak for me, nor does it speak for Christian faith in general. In fact, it doesn’t even speak for a significant fraction of catholics. It speaks for itself: The bureaucracy controlling the catholic church.
Christianity didn’t suppress anybody. The Catholic Church did. It may seem too fine a point to you, but it’s an important distinction. In fact, your own post supports my statement. How many of the banned people on your list were Christian, or even Catholic?
Um, I think you have the wrong end of the stick. Who the hell said, “more than one group doing something wrong makes it suddenly okay”? Repression and censorship are NEVER okay. My point is that is absurd to point fingers only at the Christians whne other groups are just as guilty. Christians are no better and no worse than the common run of humanity.
<ponders…>So Christianity didn’t burn hundreds of thousands of people, Christians did. Christianity didn’t force-convert the Native Peoples of the Americas, Christians did. Christianity didn’t murder the Albigensians, Christians did. Christianity didn’t sack the city of Constantinople, stable its horses in the churches, wipe its collective butts with pages from the holy books, rip the gold off the icons–Christians did.
I guess it’s too fine a point for me.
What?! Does it make it better or worse that most of them were Christians? I’m sorry, I just don’t get your point here and I’m going to have to ask for clarification.
Not to kiss ass, but I just wanted to thank and applaud gobear for his excellent posts filled with useful and objective information. Sir, you have lessened my ignorance. I thank you for it.

WV Woman, where have you gone? I was enjoying your breath-takingly stupid hate-filled invective. Please come back. I’m sort of depressed today, and need to feel morally and intellectualy superior to someone, and my cat just ain’t cutting it.
I said in my post that there should be less finger pointing. I agree with you completely on that. What I was talking about is the fact that you seemed, in my opinion, to be dismissing everything Squish was saying just b/c Christians weren’t the ONLY ones commiting these acts. Turning a blind eye to it, if you will. Squish never said that Christians were the only ones who commited these acts, she merely stated that there are some religions who haven’t (pagans, ect.) a point that you have refused to acknowledge.
