A list of stuff that pisses WV_Istara off

Here is my list of things that are currently pissing me off.

Join me and make your own list!

1. People that slag off working parents, describe pregnant couples that prefer privacy re their child’s name/gender as “control freaks”, call planned parenthood organisations "baby murderers"

2. People that get all whiny and shitty and cry unfair play when someone takes issue with their prejudice and ignorance

3. People that use bigoted, ignorant, hate speech against an entire race or religion

4. People that are so dense they don’t know the difference between acceptable speech and hate speech

5. People that are so immensely dense they can’t envisage how giving up a child for adoption could be a lifelong, traumatic experience

6. People with such immensely unenlightened, bigoted and ill-informed views on "Arab men"

7. People who make equally unenlightened, un-backed-up posts on Middle East politics

Well put! My sentiments exactly.

“The Jews have a right to the land” is “unenlightened”, especially in response to the question “Who has a right to that land”?

Uh-huh.

How 'bout #8. People so fanatical that they can’t see the merest hint that the opposing arguement might have the merest hint of validity?

Urm…just so we’re clear, I’m not defending WV_Woman in any way, outside of that post, which struck me as being an ok response to the OP.

Uh - Fenris - as you cited it point totally taken, however the offending line was:

“The Jews have the right to the land”

not “a” right to the land.

Which might sound like the snickiest nickiest nit pick in the world, but in this case “a” versus “the” has a very deep, far-reaching difference. At least to me, it suggested that only one people had the right to live there, not two. Apologies if I read too much into the choice of the definite article, or misinterpreted it.

And as for #8 - if that’s targeted at me - again, my contention was not that Jewish people don’t have a right to live in Israel/Palestine, but that Palestinians do as well. I think you misunderstood me - or maybe I misunderstood you - but hell anyway, we know neither of us are flaming bigots, but we all know who is…

Given WV’s other posts, I don’t think you did. I completly missed it, hence the first rolleyes, but now that you’ve pointed it out, I see what you mean and agree. “A” vs “The” in light of good ol’ WV’s other posts DOES make a difference.

True! and it was NOT aimed at you (though my horrible pre-coffee phrasing made it sound like it was! My apologies.)

Hey, you got a right to your opinion , and so does WV_Woman. Take a valium.

If that were so, the SDMB might as well shut down. The purpose of this place is to clear up misconceptions, clear away the mists of misinformation, and to wipe away the gray film of ignorance. If we were to abdicate our responsibility to educate people and correct errors in logic and knowledge, we might as well be on Yahoo! (shudder).

Many people here have shown me errors in my arguments and lacunae in my information, for which I am grateful. We would be doing WV_Woman no favors by humoring her in her ignorance.

People have a right to an informed opinion, but they have no right not to be challenged when they spout utter bilge.

Just where did i say that Istara shouldn’t post? I think that i said, “you have a right to your opinion”, but chill out already. She has the right to comment on WV_Woman but i don’t have the right to comment on what she says?

gobear, I couldn’t have said it better.

Well, maybe I could, but you got the point across.

The Straight Dope
FIGHTING IGNORANCE SINCE 1973
[sup](IT"S TAKING LONGER THAN WE THOUGHT)[/sup]

That’s not what I said, and I never questioned your right to post. My point is that the purpose of this MB is to combat ignorance, to ferret out the Straight Dope on issues, to challenge comfortable prejudices and stereotypes.

You may post any sort of foolishness you like, but you can’t expect that your post will not go unchallenged if it contains misinformation or outright errors.

If someone posts, “Muslims are a jealous, warring people, have been ever since Ishmael was born,” that poster will be shown that her statement is, in fact, wrong, and be directed to books that might educate her on the subject, such as Karen Armstrong’s Islam: A Short History, or The ornament of the world : how Muslims, Jews, and Christians created a culture of tolerance in medieval Spain, by Maria Rosa Menocal.

Imthjckaz, thanks for the kind words.

Erratum: In my previous sentence, I should have written
“You may post any sort of foolishness you like, but you can’t expect that your post will go unchallenged if it contains misinformation or outright errors.”

Anyone else notice anything coincidental?

Wow, it’s so much fun to know that i cause so much curiosity! But, no i am not WV_Woman, there are more that two people in the state of WV, at least by the last census. Hon, you need another hobby!

Nah, you’re not her, you’re her sock, er, I mean friend. I think you two need a new hobby. Unless you are here to dispel ignorance (and not perpetuate it): Piss Off. You are a bandwidth vampire.

Now , that was the first good laugh i’ve had all day. You sure put me in my place!

Hey, hey people! Troll reports go in an e-mail to a mod.

My apologies for using the wrong venue to state that opinion.
