A lot of people don't know squat about the internet.

And they don’t care to, either.

Yeah, I know it seems unlikely, but it seems to be true of even people under the age of 80. Take my AA group–none of them seem to have gone online or posted on message boards when they were drunk. Then there are my inlaws, most of whom are younger than I. They are less aware of the intertubes than a senior congressman.

Just think about it. We are trying to get kids in African villages online while what seems like half the USA isn’t.

I probably should hang out with Normals more often. Maybe things would make more sense.

Don’t call us ‘normals’.
We aren’t ‘average’ or ‘ordinary’, either.
But, one the other hand, it might be misunderstood to call us ‘special’.

Perhaps you should use the well-excepted term, "Dopers’.

N.B.: This applies to the general membership of this board regardless of whether or not the individual partakes of illicit substances or uses dope to apply and seal tissue to model airplane wings.

According to this chart, internet penetration in the U.S. is currently 78.2%, which puts us behind only the UK, Korea, Germany and Japan. The only African country on the list is Nigeria, with 28.3% penetration, but we know what they’re doing with their internet access.

Funny you should mention Nigeria. I’m actually working with the widow of one of Nigeria’s ex-dictators to get some big money out of the country. Neat huh?

No, civilians are “normals,” though I find them bizarre. We Dopers are just regular folk.

As for that internet penetration figure, I suspect it includes a lot of people who have the internet available to them, but don’t actually use it.

Hehehe! You said “penetration”!

I find it very normal for a woman in my area to spend less than 30 minutes a day online. Most of that is spent on Facebook forwarding cute pictures if my Facebook wall is any indication.

I mentioned to a friend a few weeks ago that the internet is at the very front edge of home decor fashion and crafting trends. She was shocked. She had no idea. I’d say less than 25% of my female acquaintances have even heard of Pintrest. Of those that have, at least half have come to me thinking they would introduce me to it. Then I have to say “yeah. I know. I told you about it six months ago.”

Honestly, I’ve come to feel that these women have the right idea about life. I spend way too much time online.

It’s simple. The Internet is a series of tubes.

My mother-in-law only learned how to use a computer mouse this year.

She recently won both a Kindle and an iPad3. I’m afraid if we teach her how to connect to the web she’ll either shop her money away* or send it all to Nigeria.

*: her hobby is driving all around town shopping at multiple Ross stores or whatnot

The past week I had several WTF (hehe, internet meme) moments about other people’s computer usage.

One was mail containing a route description, only the file attached was an excel file with two full desktop printscreens showing google maps.

The other was a calendar service for several hundreds or thousands of people with login “admin” and a corresponding obvious password.

Well, there’s your problem right there.

If it’s not important to their daily life, then they won’t partake.

I have the same attitude towards cellphones.
