Hi all. I don’t think I’ve read since about page two–we’ve been really busy at work. My company is having some pretty large scale lay-offs right now. Wednesday was a big day for them here. All day we kept hearing through the grape-vine who got let go. At least they all got good severance packages and such. But, still
I thought of this thread the other day. While passing a little local book store, they had a cart of used books outside; I of course had to stop and take a look, and among the books there was a Joy of Cooking cookbook. First Edition, seventh printing (GAH I have no idea why I remember THAT) circa 1950. It was $1. I thought about getting it, but didn’t. It wasn’t in great condition, but did look kind of interesting.
**Mousie **-- I know what it’s like. Thankfully I was out of office the day the axe fell… (that, and it’s all a lot less strict here; we’ve had people who have been laid off coming in, arranging their stuff on their own, even finishing small jobs and passing on information to people taking over from them. Somehow, when you treat a guy who’s laid off like a human being, they treat you that way back, despite the obvious discomfort.)
Well you know I’ve said before that I wonder if your town is like mine. Just the other night I was laughing t myself that every party I’ve been to lately has ended with the warning “drive careful, and watch for the deer!”
Blue - that’s terrible, sorry.
I just got my wax done so I’m doing the oh so tender dance of hair freedom. Now I’m gettting ready to head to Birmingham for the weekend! I’ll probably be at the protest on the steps of city hall. I’ll try not to get arrested! Nah, I’m a peaceful supporter (gay rights).
Have a good weekend everybody! I a super happy dance THANK YOU to the doper that sent me chocolates. I had one for breakfast. Plus it made me feel all special!
TGIF. I left work a little early today because nothing was going on. I went home with a detour to pay a bill and get some groceries on sale. Once I got back here, I cut up a pork loin into a bunch of chops and one roast. Then I got into bum mode. I’ll make dinner tonight and maybe craft a shopping list for tomorrow. But mostly I’ll be a bum.
I’s an AT&T Mobility grad-joo-et! I gots me a certificate to prove it even! Hey, it’s sump’n to put in the folder of useless trainin’ certificates. It’s always good for a giggle whenever I pull it out. Oh and we had cake! Cake is always good.
Tonight is taco night at El Rancho swampy. All I need to do is season up and brown the ground beast when ol’ y’all know who gets here.
Puggy the hight here today was 83 Amurrkin which is warmish for this time of year. It’s also rained buckets and buckets of wet stuff all day. By Sunday and Monday we’ll have lows in the 30s then down to the 20s. BRRRRRRRRR… guess it’s time to get out the NO SNOW signs.
Shadow, Mousie and anybody I missed… ick on the layoffs. Never fun. My present job may not be the most excitin’ in the world, but at least, for now, it’s pretty safe. A big plus for me.
And on a final note…
In the absence of Beebs there has been a noticeable lack of tastelessness and TMI in the MMP. I shall now resolve that for this week.
What do you call a rooster with erectile dysfunction?
Thanks for all the food tips, guys. I had Indian food for lunch, and rice seems to be OK… so fried rice and biryani will be added to the possible menus.
Cervaise, the gnudi look absolutely delicious and would be perfect. Unfortunately, it looks like I’ll be pinched for time next week and they look a little time-intensive… but the recipe has been bookmarked for future use, since they look awfully good.
swampus, the joke made me snerk out loud. I have to agree about the lack of TMI. I should also give honourary mention to the valiant effort that Spaz made upthread, but it falls a bit short of the benchmark set by beebs.
Oh, and congratumalations on joining the ranks of fully certified wireless customer service representatives. You join an illustrious brotherhood (or sisterhood, if you prefer) of elite agents who keep our nations talking and texting in these dark times. Display that certificate with pride, my friend.
I’m arriving here late because I am a late bloomer re: cooking.
I received Every Day Food (Martha Stewart) Great Food Fast (I’m paraphrasing the title, more or less). You really have to double or triple the recipes to make them last or to feed more than 1 or 2, but they are very nice.
It’s been like a tomb around here today. It’s usually quiet on Fridays, but this is eerie. Even the EA’s down the hall who cackle non-stop have been quiet.
And my director has lost her mind. She’s in a flurry of activity (to make us look busy, don’tcha know), so she’s scheduling meetings and I’m scheduling meetings and she’s getting double-booked and then, and then, she decides to take another vacation day. And she wants to schedule everything before December. Hello, if you’re taking vacation from the 21st through the 30th, when do you want me to schedule those meetings, exactly? What part of “you’re booked solid” don’t you understand? Hmph! Job security, right?
And I should put out a “SNOW DAMMIT!” sign, swampy, as opposed to yours. A guy on the local radio station (which is actually genuinely local, not owned by Clear Channel or any of their ilk) said it might be time to start doing the snow dance. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I’m sure I can make one up. I want snow! This is a $*&! ski resort town, we need the stuff!
So the gold diamond and ruby encrusted frame I bought for it is not too ostentatious?
snowbunny how bout I put out a sign that says “Snow This Way” with a sign pointin’ to Idaho? We might even get Puggy to put one up too to double your chances.
Taco night at El Rancho swampy was a success as usual. Shortly it shall be hot tub time.
end of work week blurfs are brewing. I wish I had some brandy. I’m going to crawl into bed early tonight. No Facebooking for me tonight. (yeah, right  )
You make be shocked to know that I had buffalo dip for dinner! And then some ice cream. I suppose after all the hype I should give you the recipe which, interestingly enough, comes from the Congressional Club Cookbook which looks more like a fancy, leather-bound bible than a cookbook.
5 cups cooked, shredded chicken
12 oz Red Hot
1 lb cream cheese
1 cup ranch dressing
1 cup (or more) shredded cheese (the recipe called for monterey jack but I only had cheddar)
Combine first four ingredients in a saucepan and heat until the mixture is smooth and bubbly. Pour into a 9x13 pan and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes. Serve with chips or crackers. Note: the original recipe calls for celery, but I’m not interested in those health foods. Note #2: This recipe could easily be halved as I have been eating it all day and there is still way too much left over.
Invisible Tenant is off for a weekend of assumed frolic. I don’t know where he’s going, or what he’s doing, but the main point is that he’s going to be out of the house for 48 hours. He only takes off like this once every three months or so.
Time for us to have fun? Nope! Someone is coming over tonight to work on wedding stuff, and our caterer will be here tomorrow night and staying the night. Might as well be a chaperoned church picnic.
OK…people need to stop posting stuff about food. It’s making me hungry, even though I just ate. I’ve added a bunch to the blog, including links to the discussions on knife-holding and honing.
It looks like our big implementation this weekend won’t be a disaster (it was a bit shaky for a while). I’m only involved on the edges, but it’s been a really long haul.
Sorry to hear about so many layoffs. It’s really scary these days, isn’t it. Here’s hoping things improve soon.
Glad you made it through your encounter with the deer without much trauma, Bobbio. Hope the weekend isn’t too stressful.
Guess I should go veg a bit. Eventually I’ll catch up and make appropriate comments to all.
In the meantime: rosie’s sig.
ETA: of course you’re chaperoned, gotti! You’re not completely married yet, yanno!!!
Okay, it’s finally Firday, which I’ve awaited all week long and now I’ve just about missed it! Gotta laugh. Hugs to all who need them; sorry to hear about the job insecurities, and will send good vibes out.
The carpet re-installation (LOL) has been pushed back to the evening of the 24th; a few of our co-workers are out and probably won’t be able to pack their things up in time. There were supposed to be packer/movers, but apparently that fell thru. (way to go, just a few days before the scheduled event, gah!) My cube is about halfway packed up. I am using this to get rid of a lot of the crap I have, so there is that, I guess. I’m really not a happy camper about this, but there’s little I can do about that.
So I am very glad it’s the weekend; I plan to simply veg the next few days too. I do have to start on the grocery shopping for the Thanksgiving holiday, but it will only be three of us, so there’s not a lot of stuff to buy.
LOL about chaperoned Gotti and soon to be hubby! Have a good time anyways, all.
