Jerry Thacker, a Pennsylvania marketing consultant whose nomination by President Bush to serve on an advisory panel on HIV and AIDS stirred controversy, announced today that he is withdrawing his candidacy for the post.

Thacker, a former Bob Jones University employee who has characterized AIDS as the “gay plague,” says he contracted the AIDS virus after his wife was infected through a blood transfusion. He was scheduled to be sworn in next week to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV and AIDS by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson, along with several other members of the panel.

“I feel I must withdraw my name from consideration to serve at this time due to my and my family’s personal concern about my ability to be effective with the council given the current controversy,” Thacker said in a letter written to Thompson released this afternoon.

White House press secretary Ari Fleischer issued a stern rebuke of Thacker’s remarks.

“The views that he holds are far, far removed from what the president believes,” Fleischer said. “The president has a total opposite view. … The president’s view is that people with AIDS need to be treated with care, compassion.”
