A new virtual PC for mac?

Still no decent virtual pc for my mac? It seems the old one sucks, but I saw something the other day about a new app to do the job. But someone (at work) was bugging me about work stuff and made me miss it. What a punk!
Anyway, I’ll not suck it up and give up my mac for a pc, but there are some things I would like to run on it.
For one, I’d like to open word docs. But the office '08 for mac apparently sucks too.
I have an iMac, runs on Power PC, G5.
Any help out there?
It may be obvious that I’m not a computer geek. :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t hold your breath.
Since all the new machines are intel-based (and can run Windoze out-of-the-box), there’s not much incentive to develop virtual machine software targeting obsolete (or at least not in production) machines any more. You should be able to open Word docs on '08, but that’s a separate issue…

Yeah, I’m looking at that pretty new “Air” laptop, but I’m not even ready to buy.

The “Air” is a beautiful machine, but it’s really positioned as a secondary machine for “Road Warriors.” The MacBook, on the other hand, is a no-compromise machine that can be used as a primary machine as well as a portable.

I use NeoOfficeJ, which is a Java version of OpenOffice for the Mac. You can open and edit Word documents in it just fine. It’s open source, so it’s free (although you can make a donation to continue development).

Seems to me that I read that the latest version was buggier than the previous, but reading their forums makes me think most of them are pretty well resolved.

I haven’t really checked it out yet. I do know you can get the tried and true 17in. MacBook for about the same price as the Air. And 17 is a good number when your eyes aren’t as sharp as they once were.
I’ve heard the Air’s solid-state drive is pretty cool. As are it’s wifi and blue tooth stuff. And it’ll slip right into a backpack.
I’m not a road warrior, but I do have a desktop, which I’ll likely keep.
Decisions, decisions.

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

It works! Cool  Opened my new recipe for Machaca.
Looks like a handy program. After I get some sleep, I’ll investigate it a little further.
Thanks, GT. That’ll hold me over till laptop time, I think.

Yeah, I’ll be using NeoOffice quite a bit I think.
Thanks guys. I’m off to the Apple store to see if they got an Air to look at.

I’ll just point out that once Apple went Intel and Parallels Workstation came out, it instantly made up my mind to get rid of my G4 tower (Quicksilver) for an iMac and a little later my home-built PC for another iMac. I’d always been a fan of VirtualPC and others, and have used them since I had my Colour Classic to run Windows 3.11! But the opportunity to run Windows at full speed (or rather, close enough not to make a whit of difference) sealed the deal.

I think you’ll find that your iMac G5 still has a pretty good resale value, should you consider upgrading to an Intel Mac. You won’t be sorry if the cost isn’t a major issue. (Craigslist made my cost of upgrading truly negligible.)

Define “decent”, for you. And, what for? Just for documents, playing games, or what?

The two actual virtual options are Parallels and VMWare Fusion. They both work fine and don’t have a lot to separate them. Their main limitation from my perspective is games, they do not emulate anything except the lowest end video dard so few modern games will work.

For that you need Bootcamp, which comes free with Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard). It lets you set up dual boot, but you need to provide your own version of Windows (as you do for the other two options, BTW). That way you’re using the native hardware including the real video board, so games work fine.

He doesn’t have an intel-based Mac.
Oops.

Thanks to gardentraveler, I’ve got decent. In the form of NeoOfficeJ for mostly microsoft word docs. I haven’t tried it with excel yet, but I will.
I wasn’t ready to spend $130 on virtual pc, which had mostly bad reviews and was abandoned by it’s maker (microsoft) quite a while back with no apologies. As is their right.
So, my needs (wants, actually) are simple and the nice folks at trinity filled those needs for me. I can now open recipes sent to me via email by a friend in the form of a word document. I wish I’d have given them ten bucks, instead of the five they asked for,
I love it when I’m happy.
