A Nice Compliment

I’m currently working on my MBA. In fact, I had my last final for my first semester last night. After the exam I spent a little bit of time speaking with the prof, whom I admire quite a bit. His class was the one of I’ve enjoyed most so far this semester and I was relating that the material really piqued my interest.

He suggested that I might want to consider pursuing a PhD in the subject when I complete the MBA. I’ve been out of school almost 10 years at this point, so I’m not sure how common it is for a prof to recommend someone pursue a doctorate in their subject, but to me that was a compliment that had me soaring.

I’m one of only four in my entire extended family to graduate from college, and the first in my family ever to go to grad school. I grew up fairly poor in a rural part of the South, so the thoguth of ahieving a doctorate is not something I would have even imagined growing up or had considered up to this point. But the fact that he had enough respect for my work in his class to even suggest it made me happy, so I thought I’d share.

Very nice.

Congrats on the compliment and on making it successfully thusfar in school. I’m working on a Master’s in Education and also had a professor tell me I should pursue a PhD. Like you I was thrilled… until I overheard her suggest to another student (of lesser intellectual worth, IMHO) that she get her PhD! Hmmm, thought I… perhaps our professor gets a free toaster for every PhD referral? Eh well, it was nice just the same!

I used to be a prof, and I would have never said that unless I meant it. I think you should take it as the compliment I bet it was meant to be.
