It’s our intention to move all the old stuff over to the new software, so please don’t worry about everything we’ve done in the past year going into the ether.
That being said, we’ll see what we’ve left with when we get through with everything, but the intent is to have a seamless move from one system to the other.
We’re not starting over from scratch; we’re simply going to a better system, taking what we already have with us.
Please stay tuned for further developments.

Well, from trying out the new software at their home site, I’ve noticed the following differences so far:
[ul][li]Preview Future![/li][li]Threads now sure number of posts, but also number of times the thread has been viewed.[/li][li]At the bottom, included with the buttons for “repy to”, “see profile”, “e-mail”, there are a few new icons, for “web page” (if you list a home page), “search”, and other stuff.[/li][li]The vBB code has underlines, which UBB didn’t.[/li][li]You can attach an icon to each post![/li][li]You can also limit the number of graphics in a post. If that were implemeneted, postings like the infamous “rolleyes concerto” would be impossible.[/ul][/li]
Of course, I’m sure many of those features can be disabled. But so far it looks very nice!
Tuba: I’m a bit confused by the outage announcement. The top of the post says from today through Monday, but in the body you say 8 hours. What’s the dope? I’m sure I’m just slow today, but will the boards really be down all weekend? (OMG, I could . . . mow the lawn!)
Any chance of a dictionary button at the bottom for spell checking? This is real handy, and I’ve seen it on other boards. Also, the forums dont seem to highlight threads you’ve already viewed, or am I missing something again? Preview is great.
8 hours was the original estimate to what it would take to get the initial software installed.
We’re back up – not totally, but enough that you can read and post – inside that time frame.
The rest of it is just all the pesky details, like finishing up the conversions and etc.
In fact, I’m pretty amazed we got back up before dawn; it’s the nature of software to be fractious. Remember this is all new stuff, this program has been out for . . . about two weeks.
Please give us a little time to get everything squared away; things are better NOW (if not complete) and they will only improve from here.
Hmmmm, this is very interesting. Some of the changes may take a while to get used to, but I like most of the improvements I’ve seen so far. Good job, admins!
I’m a wee bit confused (it is early after all) but so far so good! Thanks for all the good work, guys! (it’s never too early to suck up to the techies!)
I tried to post both a blank topic and a blank post, and couldn’t - good.
Also like the “go to first unread post” link at top of page, but for some reason I don’t see it on this thread.
Definitely like the way that the most recent posts are shown when replying.
Yes, I’d like to complain that last night the Straight Dope Message Board neglected to tape a big sign to the front of my computer saying “Don’t Worry–We Didn’t Drop Great Debates”, so that when I came downstairs this morning, I wouldn’t have had to spend the worst 5 minutes of my life, snarling at my children and kicking the dog, while the server chugged its way through loading ATMB and I could then read J.Davis’s most reassuring and informative post.
I’d also like to complain that I had to walk all the way back to my e-mailbox to get my password before I could login. The nerve of some people!
P.S. Here in Post Reply, if you scroll way down, it shows you the thread upside down (backwards?). So no more fiddling with the Back button or opening new windows to see exactly what kind of new anus you need to rip someone. Yay!
I foresee a bit of confusion with the Reply with Quote icon now at the bottom of the post, where it still looks like it ought to belong to the post underneath it. But I guess we can all get used to it.
I adore the enormous edit window. You thought my posts were verbose before, just wait!
And who is the tech genius who came up with the Preview Reply idea? I’ll kiss your feet, whoever you are, if you have an ISP that supports e-mailing them to me.
Somebody said there’s now a limit on how much graphics you can post? Where is that? I don’t see it.
So, vB is the same thing as UBB, only farther down the alphabet.
And I’m sorry, I still keep reading the phrase “automatically parse URLs” as something to do with parsley. Why does it want to “parsley” the URLs? I know how to “parsley” a piece of baked fish…
