A Perfect Storm of Suck: Ratner to Direct "Youngblood" Movie

You know, I’d be willing to inflict a live-action Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose and Strange Kiss on an unsuspecting world if it meant that I got to see Patrick Stewart playing Spider Jerusalem in Transmetropolitan, an animated Blacksad or if it meant Ray Stevenson getting a crack at his truly destined comic-book role as the titular character from Proof. Hell, I’d do it for an Alpha Flight movie.

You’ll be fine. Just walk with your arms straight out and pretend you’re on a tightrope and you can make it!

Maybe it’ll do a “The Producers”, and be such a bad production of bad source material that the double negative will invert to good (or at least entertainingly laughable). Or does true suckitude transcend such petty schemes?

That’s not bad enough?

I don’t know, it’s up against some serious competition for that title.

I’d never heard of Rob Liefeld, and thought you must be exaggerating. Then I followed your Googling advice, and looked at this examination of Rob Liefeld’s “art”. My God; how in the world did he get to be popular? It’s not like the art is deliberately weird in a clever way, or that the writing is sharply satirical; it’s all pseudo-clever and sucky and makes me feel bad.

Honestly I have no idea. The best theory I’ve heard is that Liefeld appealed to the adolescents; that they saw themselves reflected in his work.

As a reaction to the film announcement one of the bigger comic blogs is soliciting opinions from anyone who ever liked Youngblood to explain why; and not even in a “so we can laugh at you” kind of way. If there is an answer to that question then you may find it there.

ETA: This is one of the times that I take a great deal of comfort from my standard response to such announcements: if I had a nickle for every licensed film that was announced and didn’t get made then I’d have $82.05. The odds are very high that this will never be inflicted upon the public.

I can’t find my ticket stub in any of my 87 pouches. It’s enough to make me want to shake my lumpy ill-formed fists in frustration.

It’s funny, but I always liked the CONCEPT of Youngblood, but not the execution. I think what Liefeld was going for was what Millar later did with Authority and Milligan did with X-Force. The concept of superhero as celebrity is pretty interesting. I am not a big Ratner fan (though I enjoyed X3), but this could be a decent flick if properly executed. Hell, I’d let Millar write the story.

Another funny thing is that this comic, which is a spin on superheroes in the real world scenario, pretty much came out as a result of what Moore did with Watchmen. It was one of a thousand gritty, “mature” works.

I find it interesting that the news of this project comes right as the Watchmen film is to debut.

If Watchmen is a hit, will we get a whole slew of subpar Superhero films trying to be “gritty?”

Because with a Year One-esque Batman franchise owning the box office, and Watchmen hitting the theaters, we could have the early 90’s Mylar Age of Cinema!

Foil Enhanced Popcorn INDEED!

Wow. I’ve been out of the comicbook club since 85. I was never exposed to his work. I saw books with his work on the covers and didn’t much like it at a glance but I figured that the style had just changed. Until I saw that link I didn’t realize how much he sucked.

[Hedley Lamar] How could he do those stunts with such tiny feet?[/Hedley Lamar]

Man did I ever hate that guy. I had successfully repressed the memory of him until this thread. I always hated how he made Cable look like a pudgy middle-aged uncle. Cable!! for crying out loud, man!!

It is making me laugh.

To be fair to Ratner he also directed Red Dragon which, as you can see, got a fairly decent 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Personally, I thought that movie was underrated.

Thing is, Liefield will be further vindicated that his art style is legit when this movie comes out. He’s already rich as hell for drawing the way his target audience wanted.

Maybe the director will get CGI teams to fill out women’s bosoms to watermelon size and also have them correct unrealistic human posture.

You sure weren’t the only one! I was wondering what Cynthia Gibb was looking like these days! She could reprise her role as Jessie Chadwick.

Wasn’t he the first person to ever draw Cable? I think he might have even created him.

It’s funny, I read Liefeld’s entry on Wikipedia and he seems to understand he is pretty much a hack. He compares himself to Brittany Spears.

I’d go see it myself if I had eyes.
