A phone call to DRY, or hijacking the board

<clears throat>
<looks up, shaking head>

I’ll just be outside then, m’kay? That’s a little too rich for my blood.

<casually hints that MC should get a sock…>
<returns to his family obligations>

Hi, DRY!

And thanks to DRY, Kathryn and I may meet one of these days.
If ever manage to get down to the Carnegie again…I’m going through book withdrawal…waaaaayhhhh

Mine too. I’m planning on contracting a case of selective amnesia soon.

mrblue, we don’t screen calls, the one ring thing means that we were online at the time. Leaving a message is an iffy way of getting a hold of any of us. The system takes a while to shuttle the messages and then the people who check them may or may not erase/not tell you they exist.

Le Sang, how are you doing? e-mail/ICQ me your phone number and I’ll try to call you sometime.

Guin, yea, we all have to get together sometime.

Sigh. I’ll be on dial up for a bit longer, the cable people are disagreeing as to if our neighbourhood actually has the ability to connect us. The guys running the cable through our backyard said we did. The tech guys who scheduled our appointment said we did. The girl who we called when the tech people failed to show for our appointment said we didn’t.

And I lost another earring. Hoops hate me I guess.

I don’t recall exactly what it was that you were calling me out on (protectiveness, envy or whatever.) But I remember my attitude being “Well, he’s engaging in the exact same behavior with repect to Kathryn.” (Note the “exact same behavior”. I’m certainly not claiming moral superiority.)

I also don’t wish to leave the impression that it’s in bad form to “follow” anyone around from thread to thread. Unless you’re being hostile, or unless the other person clearly doesn’t want you doing it.

In any event, it’s over and done with.

What MST3K movies are you guys going to see? I’d recommend Mitchell, Robot Monster and It Came from Outer Space, but it really depends on what you two think makes for a good episode. I was telling Kathryn that I tend to prefer the short subject films before the movies, and also that the quality of the movie itself mattered little to me–it was the number of great lines that the robots (and Joel/Mike) got off.
**

Err…umm…I…uh…haven’t actually seen Seven.

Now, I have seen Kevin Spacey in American Beauty (the last hour of it), where he’s in bed with a hottie quite a bit younger than him…

…and gets shot in the back of the head. So let’s not draw the parallels any further. :eek:

Well, now I’m jealous of BOTH of you.

As to your book withdrawal, I’m sure you’ll get a book or two for Christmas.

Well, I’m glad you liked it. I’m hoping you’ll like the other book half as much. And you still need to tell me what else you want (that I can purchase, that is).

  1. I thought you wanted to see a hockey game?
  2. OK, spend 24/7 with me while I’m in Pittsburgh, and we can skip seeing Super Mario.
  3. Hi, Opal!

I’d guess that they’re being worked out. But you aren’t a wuss. You may want to avoid conflict. Understandable. Or take sides. Also understandable. But you are no wuss, and I’m (seriously) a bit frustrated at you continually calling yourself one. Stop thinking that your strength derives from other people. It derives from you.

The tapes I have are pretty much from the last two or three seasons, so that unfortunately rules out your suggestions. I usually buy my sister some of the tapes for Christmas (doesn’t The Wild World of Batwoman sound like a Christmas-y movie?) so she has a few of the older ones…

I’ll bring a few out and let her pick, but I humbly will recommend:

Party at Horror Beach
The Leech Woman
Hobgoblins
The Incredibly Strange Creatures that Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies

I watched it and Titus for the first time last weekend… I’m not sure which one had the nastier images.

I’m pretty sure I didn’t give enough to spoil it for you, though. Worth seeing if you can stand the gore–a good effort as far as movies go; directed by David Fincher of Fight Club fame (of course there was Alien 3…)

{{{DRY}}}}
It’s too much, it really is! You REALLY shouldn’t have, you dope, and I love you for it!
sigh You are one HELL of a guy, did I ever tell you that?
:::DRY:::

Anyhoo, I would recommend Manos: the Hands of Fate, depending on one’s tolerance for a really bad movie. You might have to ease up to it…it’s fairly painful, as is Space Mutiny and Hobgoblins. Mitchell kicks arse, but if one isn’t used to bad movies, seeing Joe Don Baker in bed with Linda Evans with a strategically placed bottle of BABY OIL on the night table can ammount to a NASTY shock. If you want to start out with Joe Don Baker, but can’t handle the horror yet, try Final Justice. And don’t try Boggie Creek II…and the Legend Continues right off the bat…Crenshaw can be traumatic.

For beginners, I’d try Jack Frost (the first one I saw, and still my favorite). Then there’s also Quest of the Delta Knights, Eegah, The Brain that Wouldn’t Die, Danger Diabolik, Touch of Satan, Hamlet (yes, you read that right),
The Soultaker, Girl in Gold Boots, Puma Man, The Deadly Bees, Space Children, The Final Sacrifice, Riding with Death and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank-featuring a young and rather sexy Raul Julia in a really, really shitty movie.
And once again…
{{{DRY}}}

I have many of the ones you listed… Not sure how much she’ll be able to take in one day though.

Honestly, I thought Hobgoblins would be a decent intro. You really think it’s anywhere near as taxing as Manos?

Hmmm…depends. I wouldn’t mind Hobgoblins, and no, it’s not AS BAD as Manos (although the Brains say otherwise, believe it or not). BUT…it might be a little much…it’s still a steaming pile of cinematic bantha fodder.

I guess you guys know a little bit more about MST3K than me. I saw MST3K only when it was on Comedy Central, when it moved to Sci-Fi, I lost it (I didn’t get Sci-Fi until this year).

I don’t recognize any of the films you mentioned previously (well, as MST3K episodes–I recognize Party at Horror Beach and The Incredibly Strange Creatures that Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies as legendary bad films.)

But I do recognize Manos, as a film I HAVE seen, was that one in the last two seasons?

I recommend Manos very much, by the way.

[sub]I don’t recommend it as a non MST3K film…YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN![/sub]

Oh, and as to Seven and Titus–I’m not much into gore, though I can get by it, I suppose, if I really think the film will be good enough. I’m kind of put off by gore, though. (Not Al Gore.)

Oh, and I’ve seen the BBC version of Titus Andronicus. Disgusting.

You’re welcome, of course.
**

Haven’t seen Space Mutiny and Hobgoblins, but I definitely recommend Manos, which also has one part of the two part short “Hired!”, if I recall correctly.

And Kathryn can take it. Hell, she’s into bondage…
**

I think that’s great (well, not that image). I LOVED this movie (when Linda Evans writes on Mitchell’s car with lipstick, when we see Mitchell’s couch and one of the robots “offers” Linda Evans something to eat "must be something in this couch, and when one of the robots says, during a shot of Merlin Olson onscreen “Mitchell looks down. Think I’ll send him a pick me up bouquet.”).

Great stuff.
**

Geez, except for The Brain that Wouldn’t Die and Eegah, I’ve never seen any of these as MST3K episodes.

HAMLET???

Oh, it’s KATHRYN we’re introducing to MST3K? Then perhaps she can take it!
:smiley:

Yeah, Crow, I think says, “There’s some potato chips in the couch cushions, I think.”

And yes, Hamlet. It was a German-dubbed into English production with Maximillian Schell. And it SUCKS. It’s funny though-Man, uncle’s hot!
Okay, see what happens is, Mike is playing three card monty with Pearl, and he says if she loses, he gets to pick the movie-she wins, he picks TWO movies. So he wins, and says, “How about the greatest production of all time-Give me Hamlet. Olivier, Brannaugh, take your pick.”
So Pearl sends him this really kind of poorly done version. It’s HYSTERICAL!

Final Justice could almost be called Mitchell II. It’s Joe Don Baker as a Texas cop who goes to Malta to get this mafia guy arrested. And this time, M&TB are MERCILESS. In fact, if one saw this episode without knowing the history of Joe Don Baker and MST3K, they’d be like, “man, they are NASTY!”
(Did you know that Joe Don maintains that if he ever sees any of the Brains, he will kick their asses for Mitchell? HA HA!!! A friend of mine on a mailing list said she saw Joe Don Baker come out of a movie one night while working at a theater, and he looked PISSED!)
Anyways, it’s REALLY funny-they do a chase through a church, and Joe Don keeps getting arrested and they keep making fart noises. And they do a chase in a church, and Crow’s like, “That’s what I hate about churches-they wear their religion on their sleeve. I mean, I go to a church, I don’t want to be assaulted with God God God the whole time.”

It’s FUNNY!!!

A quick update (for those of you who really care)…

We started out with the a couple of the short specials (IIRC the '98 Oscar preview and blockbuster review). Immediately following that was the last 60 minutes or so of Terror From the Year 5000, which I hadn’t intended on watching, but she seemed to be enjoying it, so I let it play.

After lunch, the art gallery, meeting a few of her friends (hello Kristina!), and Becca’s recital, we eventually made it back to watch Incredibly Strange Creatures. Rarely have I seen anyone laugh so hard… It was just as much fun watching Kathryn as it was the movie. Invasion of the Neptune Men was after that, it was a little before 11, and I thought that it would likely put both of us to sleep. Given the difficulty level of that one (and her reaction when I told her it was a Japanese film) we ceased our MST3K-ing for the night. The visit ended shortly thereafter.

I must get to bed now, but I need to say that Kathryn is as lovely a person as she is here.

And to Medea’s Child (the rest of you, turn away):

Words failed me at the time, dear, as they typically do, but I wanted you to know that I had a great time with you today and that I’d love to see you again sometime.

(OK, technically it was yesterday… Sue me.)

mrblue-did you see Mike Nelson when he was lecturing at CMU?
I never got the chance…:frowning:

The next film you should see is Jack Frost. MY all time favorite. (and the first MST3K I ever saw, so it has sentimental feelings as well…)
BTW, I have tons of MST3K wav files.

Oh, and rent MST3K: the Movie.

Dan…growl upon the curse of dial up. Just got your e-mail, taking the forty minutes to open it now. Just about go up to call you…but I’m on dial up…

nevermind, I’ll post my long thing later.

summary
Steve! MST3K was a blast and I hope you weren’t too bored getting carted around my odd little life. We’ll have to play again. hug!

back later…[sub]stupid dial up[/sub]

I didn’t know he was on the lecture circuit! Where’s the schedule? I did read his book, though.

It’s one of the first ones I taped with the intention of saving. I honestly don’t remember the first one I saw, but I think it was around the same time as Escape 2000 (at least I think that’s what it was called…)

I picked it up while Christmas shopping this year for $10.

Bored!?! Are you kidding me? I had a lovely time. I am even considering taking a Friday off sometime after the holidays and observing you in the natural environment of Pittsburgh for a weekend–maybe I’d get to meet Guin, too.

It’s not quite the same as IRL, but…

{{{Kathryn}}}

I don’t know, I know he sometimes does talks.
It was back in October, I think? I found out at the last minute and couldn’t get there. Yeah, I bought his book with my birthday money. Also, I believe I heard he has a deal to do two more books.

Ever see this?

I am wondering whether I’ll ever get to meet Kathryn in person. And, even if we do, I’ll probably not hit it off with her.

:frowning:

Bullshit. You’ve “spoken” on the board, via email, and the phone. Next step, guy. You’ve had her eating out of your hand, now it’s time to take her into your arms. Maybe it won’t work, but you have to try.
