I propose a political chat forum for commenting on news stories and current events that aren’t worthy of deep discussion in Great Debates which is more theological and philosophical issues also.
Curtis, I know you’re very young, but you’re starting to get on a lot of people’s nerves here. You post a hell of a lot of OPs, but don’t contribute all that much to the discussions…this is not considered a positive thing. I’m thinking you should step back and think about all this for a minute before you write your next OP - because otherwise, I can’t see you lasting very long. Please, listen to what I’m saying, don’t just get mad.
I don’t know. It doesn’t matter. There’s not a requirement that a banning be based on some kind of precedent. If the moderators here decide to ban you, they’ll ban you.
Even if you’re not banned, people might just start ignoring you. Already, when i see your name under a thread title, i tend to move on, because you often seem to just start threads for your own amusement, without really caring very much about where the conversation goes.
You currently have 775 total posts, and have already started 134 threads. You’ve started, on average, more than one thread every single day you’ve been here. That can get you a reputation for being an attention seeker, or at the very least someone who needs to get a blog or a LiveJournal.
I’ve been here over 8 years, have over 14,000 posts, and i’ve only started 338 threads. I’m not saying that you need to start as few as i do; nor am i saying that you should refrain from starting threads if you have something that you want to share or to talk about. But you might just want to think a little bit before starting a thread on any and every minor topic that catches your attention. There are plenty of threads going here all the time; why not participate in some other people’s threads a bit more? There’s no prize for starting the most discussions.
Oh, please, Argent Towers. Let’s get real.
Curtis LeMay, the idea of a politics forum has been mooted on numerous occasions. It isn’t likely to happen, mostly because there really is no good reason for it other than to reduce the number of threads in Great Debates by about 75%. I’m not going to bother to search for it, but I think that you will find we had a somewhat lengthy discussion of this very issue within the last six months, and the answer from those that are in control of the matter was “no.”
I will suggest this: if you are going to post a request like this, the least you could do is spell out your reasons for the request. Otherwise, it does tend to look like someone just spamming whatever pops into their mind as a thread.
No, no one is going to be banned for making multiple suggestions. Nor is anyone going to be banned for merely being annoying.
Curtis, it has to do with social interactions. Imagine that a person moves into your neighborhood and wants to be friends. The first thing that person starts doing is making suggestions about what kind of shoes you should wear, what color shirt you should put on, etc. They become annoying and you don’t want to deal with them anymore. Nothing to do with calling the teacher and forbidding them to be in the same classroom with you (banning), just you don’t want to hang with them.
And that’s got nothing to do with whether their suggestions are good or not. After you’re friends for a while, sure, a good friend can tell you that a red shirt doesn’t go with your hair color. But that’s later in the relationship. It’s similar. You’re coming here fairly new, and we’re glad to have you here, but if your behaviors become annoying, folks won’t want to talk to you.
Nothin’ to do with banning (moderator action.) All about social interaction (posters’ actions.)
While generally true, I was a little astonished a few months back to realize that Skald the Rhymer starts more than a thread a day and has been doing so for some time. He’s started 750 threads since February (about 2.8 per day). I’m not sure what his total number is since he joined the board.
For that, he’s done amazingly well at flying under the radar.
Sorry I’ll try to curb my excessive posting (I was criticized on other boards for that).
As for the reasons for such a forum: I think if you say have a news story that’s like “Neo-Nazis vandalize local synagouge” or “Fourteen people killed in bombing in Iraq.” it’s not Great Debate worthy but I still want it discussed. Also it’s a good forum for political polls with debate (ie what political party are you?)
Some of those discussion may well be so spirited as to be in the Pit. Deeply held beliefs and all that. If you’re looking for a fight to the death on hot button issues might as well start in the Pit and go on with yourself.
Look at what you wrote. “I still want it discussed.”. Not “I have anything interesting to say on the topic.” Not even “I want to participate in a discussion about it”. One of the things you’ve been doing is starting a thread on a hot button topic and rarely returning to the shitstorm you created. That’s kinda like saying “Hey, let’s you and him fight”. There are other terms that may be applicable to such conduct as well. They aren’t flattering.
There are valid arguments for the creation of a “Politics” forum, but for the time being there’s no chance of it happening for a variety of reasons.
Suffice it to say the issue has been raised numerous times before by many, many people (including myself) and the response has always been some variant of “Not a chance”, with an addendum lately of “And stop asking!”.
I don’t like it either, but that’s how it is, unfortunately.
Yeah, I’m growing weary of the “I still want it discussed” attitude too.
Participate if you have something to say, enough with the ‘discuss’ crap. This is not the place for that. The board is not an essay question on a midterm exam.
