A poll about your knowldege of the greatest state in the U S of A: Kentucky!

  1. What age are the horses in the Kentucky Derby? No idea.
  2. What are the three races in the Triple Crown, in correct order? No idea.
  3. What’s a gelding? I think a castrated horse?
  4. What is Colonel Sanders’s first name? Rebus.
  5. How many “secret herbs and spices” does KFC use? Dunno.
  6. How many NCAA men’s basketball championships has the University of Kentucky won? Uh…5?
  7. Who is the majority whip of the US senate (also Kentucky’s senior senator)? Agh, this one at least I should know…
  8. Have you ever heard of Ale-8-1? Nope.

I currently live in Pennsylvania.

:frowning:

From New Jersey, these answers (I didn’t cheat, I swear):

  1. The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont
  2. Harland
  3. 11

Three? Oh, I’m sorry. That’s the number of consecutive times UK has lost to Florida.

Who’s the official state babe? Ashley Judd or Rebecca Gayheart?

  1. What age are the horses in the Kentucky Derby?

3 in the English and Irish Derbies, so I’ll go with 4 year olds.

  1. What are the three races in the Triple Crown, in correct order?

Preakness Stakes, Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes

  1. What’s a gelding?

A male horse that has been neutered.

No good on the rest - but I spent 10 days in KY in 2003 (Henderson) and enjoy my racing. Managed a trip to Ellis Park while I was there. Nice to be able to take kids to the races, as in England. HK forbids it.

Or should that be the Revised Substandard Perversion?

Anyway, when my family were invited to speak at Henderson Rotary, we offered them this version of the state song as a tribute to the fine fare we had enjoyed in KY:

I think I’ll have to go with Ashley, seeing has how she hasn’t run over and killed any 9-year-old boys.

I’m from Connecticut and I haven’t read the rest of the thread. My WAGs:

  1. 3 years old?

  2. Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes

  3. A neutered horse.

  4. No idea.

  5. 5?

  6. No idea.

  7. Nope.

I’m sensing a strong western Kentucky bias in the OP.

And how many national titles has Billy D and his slicked-back hair won at Florida, pray tell?

kelly5078, you might be getting a western KY bias from me, since I’m from ACTUAL Western Kentucky (i.e. NOT Bowling Green.) That annoys the hell out of me. Kentucky extends far beyond Owensboro and Bowling Green.

  1. Where did Kentucky play basketball before Rupp Arena was built?

Memorial Colosieum

  1. Who was the first female governor?

Martha Layne Collins

  1. Harry Truman’s vice-president was from Kentucky. What was his name, and where was he born?

Alben Barkley
Born in Graves County.

  1. How many counties does Kentucky have?

120, only Texas and Georgia have more.

  1. There is only one Division I university in the state that UK has never played in basketball. Which one is it?

Wow, I don’t know for sure, but I would think it would be Murray since they play Louisville every year and I can remember games against EKU and Morehead.

Preach it, brother!

Nope. Born and raised in the Bluegrass (ie, near Lexington). That’s where the thouroughbred questions are coming from.

Wow, tough!

1 - 3 yrs old I believe
2 - Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and the Preakness - no idea of the order
3 - An elf-like creature that has been mostly exterminated by the Skeksis. Females have wings.
4 - Paul?
5 - 8 maybe
6 - 5 championships
7 - no clue, sorry!
8 - nope

I’ve never been to Kentucky

The only answer I know is that Col. Sanders’ first name is Harland. But I’m Canadian city boy and know nothing about horses or US state politics. I don’t even know anyone who has ever been to Kentucky. I hear it’s nice, though.

Well, if you are a UK fan, it is definitely Ashley Judd. She doesn’t act the prima donna, but instead actually puts on the T-shirt, mingles with the students, jumps up and down and doesn’t mind getting sweaty.

You know I would too, if I could get my worthless brother to ship me some (Diet Ale 8-1) to Washington State!

How about Molly Sims? She’s from Murray, KY. (link should be work safe, but has bikinis, so be careful)

I just missed Rebecca Gayheart in the grocery store the other day; her little town is right next to my little town. The cashier said she wasn’t looking very good, but that’s probably just the difference between grocery store looks and Hollywood set looks.

I am a big fan of Ale-8; the only reason I don’t drink it more often is the calories. (There is Diet Ale-8, but I refuse to acknowledge its existence.)

I guess I can add some questions, as a Kentucky boy:

  1. Which popular Kentucky whiskey calls itself “Kentucky Whiskey” because it is not, in fact, bourbon? And why not? (Hint: Sadly, their Mint Julep mix provided the official mint juleps at Churchill Downs for last year’s Derby.)
  2. How long is Makers Mark aged?
  3. Who invented bourbon, and what was his day job?
  4. Up until a vote a few years ago, Bourbon County was _____ while Christian County was ______.
  5. Pronounce: Athens, Cairo, Versailles.
  6. You’re in Liberty. Which direction would you want to go in to get to West Liberty?
  7. Describe a Hot Brown. Where might you go to get a good one?
  8. Western KY BBQ is unique for its use of what meat?

Let’s see… $26.86 to ship eight bucks’ worth of soda pop???

[hijack]There are more locals on SDMB that I’d thought! BrianJedi, it might be time for us to put together that LexDope…[/hijack]
