A poll- does anyone else tidy up the hotel room before the cleaning crew comes in?

Not usually but they don’t really go around organizing our stuff. I can only recall one time where they folded our clothes but that was a boutique hotel and at that point we were there for several weeks. Usually they just make the bed and the bathroom. Sometimes I’m in a hotel for a month at a time, but mostly its just a week but even then it’s hard to keep it tidy when you are kind of living there. Mostly everything is in the suitcase or closet but all towels are on the floor. This seems rambled sorry.

Yes. Dirty clothes are put away, the room is straightened, all used towels are piled together and I wipe down the sink. I also tip as I go which is usually $1/day per bed. Might have to check if that’s the going rate.

haha yes all of the time and I ask myself why? I just can’t be a slob, I only use one trashcan and only one ash trey.
If I have to stay more than one night I usually write a note to the housekeepers that the linens and towels are fine… just a new refill of coffee is all that is required.

If we’re only staying overnight, all I ask is that they don’t bang on the danged door before checkout time, even if we have a do not disturb sign.

If for several days, I just catch the crew on their rounds and trade towels, ask for coffee packets. Or, go to the desk and have someone there go with me to housekeeping.
I want to be comfortable in the room we are paying for, and I do Not want anyone else in it until we’re gone.
I do leave a tip and don’t make a huge mess.

Never. I stay in hotels a lot and it never occurred to me to pre-clean it. I keep things at a certain level of organization to help me pack up, but other than that, nope.

My own place is a hellhole, but I try not to leave other people’s places in the same condition, so yeah – I leave a motel room as tidy as when I first got there, if I can.

Yes. My father always insisted we did this, and on my first non-parental extended stay I was with my brother and HE insisted we do this too, so I have been dutifully trained that this is the thing to do.

We also tip heartily.

I get my stuff out of the way so the housekeeper can actually clean. Wipe down the bathroom and sink? That’s what I’m paying someone else to do, why would I do myself? I keep the room neat so I can stay in a neat room, but I do not do the housekeeper’s job for her.

For those who have mentioned putting the trash in the trash can, I put trash in the trash can at the moment it becomes trash. Do you unwrap a purchase and drop the plastic on the floor?

Wow…put my name on this post instead, and you’ve pretty much got what I came in to say. I am exactly the same, down to the lament that I can’t be as neat at home.

Trash goes in the can, towels and washcloths are draped over the tub, my personal items are all together - whether on the bathroom counter or in/on my suitcase. I don’t make the bed, but I make sure I don’t leave anything on it. I’ll wipe up my spills and dump the melted ice from the bucket. I think that gives housekeeping as easy a job as can be expected.

My mindset in doing this is not that the maid will think I’m a slob, its that they’re doing a crappy job for crappy pay and have to deal with the occasional frat party with beer cans and diarrhea and vomit all over the place, or worse, so if I can make their PITA job a bit easier, I’m more than happy to.

And I bus my table too- I don’t see this as weird, just nice

This is pretty much my attitude as well. They have a shitty job so why should I make it worse for them?

Towels in the tub if they need replacing, otherwise we hang them back up (many hotels will STILL switch them out, but more and more they will only take the ones you indicate you want changed).

We put our clothes in out-of-the-way piles/on a chair/in the suitcase and don’t really leave anything on the bed, but we never make the bed. We never make the bed at home, either, and that’s just one sheet and a duvet! Trash goes in the can the moment it becomes trash, though occasionally we will collect bottles/cans on a table or counter until we know whether or not they have recycling.

We usually just hang a do-not-disturb sign on the door for significant lengths of our say, because we keep irregular hours or just don’t feel we need someone there every day. when I accompany my husband on business trips (which has only happened twice, but it’s so much fun for me, I hope we get to do it again!) it is always in apartment-style hotels with full kitchens, so we tend to treat it as an apartment and choose to do our own cleaning as best we can.

Sometimes

But seriously, I’ll put the pizza box in the trash, and there’s often wine or beer bottles that I left on the table when I grabbed a new one. So mostly food and/or alcohol packaging.

While staying, I do my best to consolidate any and all garbage into as few containers as possible, and I will pull out and tie off the bags from the cans. I don’t open anything I don’t use – meaning I will leave the coffee setup set the way I found it, and I will only take one cup / glass out of its plastic. I put my dirty laundry into a garbage bag I bring for that purpose and put that out of sight. I don’t leave anything but the bathmat on the bathroom floor, and I don’t unfold any towel I don’t then immediately use. I wipe down and organize the bathroom counter, and I neatly stack any magazines or books I have into one pile.

When checking out, I leave the room much the same, except I pull the bedding up off the bed and leave it stacked (and sorted by type) on one of the beds. I don’t fold it, or anything, but I try to make it easier for housekeeping to take it to the laundry. And I tip well.
Much of this I do because I am personally a very neat person who has always lived in a house which is very much not. My family is not a tidy bunch, so it’s very relaxing for me to be in a well-ordered, organized space. Part of my relaxation on vacation is a reduction in the visual clutter in my life, so I do my best to keep the room nice and happy. Also, hotel housekeepers have an awful job, so I do what I can to make it easier.

Hell no. I throw all my crap in the corner as to not have the maid rummage through it. I usually tip the cleaners, but I figure that is their job. In my impetuous youth on road trips with 8 people in one room, I’ve trashed enough rooms to figure that the maids should be happy if all they have to do is minor clean up. These days, I’ve got a lot more empathy for the cleaners and make it a point not to make life anymore difficult for them than necessary.

However, in Vegas for the football playoffs/March Madness/bachelor parties, all bets are off. It is not possible to not trash the room, and I know for a fact that we’re not even close to what would be considered bad guests.

I was going to ask where the trash goes so that it must be put in the can later.

I don’t eat in my room. Dirty clothes go into a draw in the dresser. Towels are hung up. Books go on the desk. I put books that might have been on the other bed on the dresser before I leave in the morning, and that’s about it.

At home, we pick up for the cleaning ladies, but that’s because we’d never find where they put the stuff if it’s out.

I try not to mess up the room too much. I do lock away my bite guard and container in my suitcase because I don’t want to have to replace it.

Another one in the “I tidy but not clean” column. If it’s a multi-day stay, I’ll make sure my makeup, etc., is in one place on the counter so the housekeeper doesn’t have work around it. If I’ve spilled powder or dropped a glob of toothpaste in the sink, I’ll give it a swish of water and a quick wipe.

I make sure all the trash is in the wastebasket, and pull the covers up on the bed. The latter being the single most useless thing I could do, I suppose, as it just gets in the way of the maid making/changing the bed.

I try to remember to plug back in the noise-making appliances I unplugged in the night.
