I really did seriously mean my first post. No remake of TOS. Ever.
Other ideas that heve come before in Trek threads are entirely welcome. Except any all alien crew. I don’t want to see a whole series of nothing but Feklar lovin’ Klingons or ever changing brow treatments Rommies. A few special interests eps, sure, but not an alien main focus.
Linus’ idea of McHale’s Star Trek isn’t bad, but I like the anthology approach that various Dopers have suggested before. An Outer Limits style show would allow for so much good TV. Think of the ideas that could make it to screen if they didn’t all have to follow an extremely narrow focus writer’ guide. Just keep the main parts of the Trek universe in place and stay within canon.
Just think of the possiblities! An explanation of who/what the Tholian assembly actually is. Thasians gone bad. The fifth replicant. Wesley/ Traveller slash. the twenty years of really wild action alluded to prior to TOS. The 50 or so years of some action, some really boring shit just prior to TNG. The adventures of Sulu, McCoy, Scotty, et al post TUD. And then the possibilities of adding new races, people, events. The Eugenics Wars, for crying out loud! Plenty to keep Paramount busy while it still matches up with the needs of the franchise.
:dubious:
And the nice thing about an anthology series that would work now where it wouldn’t work before is that the Trek milieu is almost universally known. We’re familiar with transporters, phasers, holodecks, hyposprays, the Federation, the various Quadrants of the galaxy, the aliens, and everything else. A consistent storyline wouldn’t have to be sustained to help foster familiarity with the Trekiverse.
I’d read at one point that Roddenberry originally had the idea to do an anthology but vetoed it because of the familiarity factor. No such problem now.
I still say wait a while, though. You realize that there hasn’t been a significant stretch of time without a new Trek for 15 years now? Give it a rest, let fandom cool down a bit.
I don’t understand why with all the money the Trek series has brought in over the years…they can’t get decent make-up and effects. Stargate SG-1 and Farscape were both capable of displaying believeable and entertaining SFX, with probably a more modest budget. A new Trek series could do with aliens that don’t sport the forehead rodges. And, as most other Trek fans agree, the old guard should go. It needs and infusion of new blood. Perhaps a less than vanilla caste would be in order. Maybe the self-righteousness coul be turned down. I like the idea of a “darkages” type series, gives a little more humanity to it’s characters. Another suggestion might be to hire writers with a darker background.Take the guy who wrote “From Hell” and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and have him pen a few episodes that make the viewers cringe a bit. Solicite the help of established Sci-fi writers for a fresher perspective. most importantly, make the new series take place after already established story lines…so as to not get up the dander of fan-boys who gripe about continuity. Lastly…court new audiances. The ones who have seen TOS ad nauseum and know the length of Data’s android penis, will probably continue watching…the objective is to bring in new viewers.
P.S. Many of these suggestions are ones I have already seen in other articles…so the ideas have been floating around forever. For a new Trek series to be successful…I think the major move would be to rid themselves of the gatekeepers of Trek for good. I think those two have fallen asleep at the helm long enough.
