A Question About Thread Titles

Now who’s being humorless?

Look, if you object to a thread title as being misleading, hit the REPORT THIS POST button and let the Moderators decide. It seems to me that deliberate hyperbole is not the same as misleading, and especially not in the Pit.

Examples:

  1. “Keynes is an asshole” is a title that expresses what the OP thinks, and reflects the contents of the post. It’s not true – Keynes is a human being, he has an asshole as do all human beings, but that is not the sum and total of his biology. But the title is appropriate, in expressing the opinion of the OP. That’s what most of the threads in the Pit do.

  2. “Keynes said that we should lynch all biologists” is an untrue statement: it purports to represent reality. It is not presented as merely the opinion of the OP, but as a fact. Such a statement should be (IMHO) disallowed as a title.

That’s quantitatively different from a title such as “God created the world in six days” (for example), which is setting the tone for a debate and is clearly reflecting the opinion of the OP in a matter that every prudent/sensible person understands is debatable (in the sense that there are at least two opinions held, no matter how wrong-headed one side might be.)

  1. “I think Keynes implied that we should lynch all biologists” is an expression of what the OP thinks, and reflects the contents of the post and should be OK. Similarly, “Did Keynes imply that we should lynch all biologists?” would be OK.

Those would be my guidelines. But, I’m not a Pit Moderator, I’m just an Administrator stepping in.

We do not like post titles that are misleading or ambiguous or not specific enough. A title like, “What do you think?” fails to provide enough information about the subject, and should be REPORTED so it can be edited. A title that is misleading about facts or subject should be REPORTED so that the Moderators can decide whether it needs editing.

We do not have the time or the energy or the inclination to promulgate regulations to define where the line is drawn. The Moderators will respond to each individual situation.

Hence, USE THE REPORT THIS POST BUTTON WHEN IN DOUBT.

[sub]Yes, I’m shouting.[/sub]

A. My post was humorous.
B. I didn’t say you were humorless; I said you were overly defensive.

Did you accidentally post in the wrong thread?

No, no, I thought my post was humorous. I think we have a failure to communicate.

Apparently. How is my reply inconsistent with the fact that you think your post was humorous?

Rolleyes.

Could you be a little more cryptic? Thanks.
