Ref this thread 1 in 2 boys sexual abused? - Factual Questions - Straight Dope Message Board

The thread title which appears on the GQ forum listing http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/forumdisplay.php?f=3 is “1 in 2 boys sexual abused?”

The same wording appears on the thread’s page near the top just below where it says
Straight Dope Message Board > Main > General Questions

But down in the actual original post, just below his name it says “1 in 3 boys sexually abused?”
Compared to the other two titles, 2 becomes 3 and “sexual” grows an “ly”

I would not have thought it was possible to get two titles on one thread.

I’ve refreshed both pages just in case I loaded them just as a mod was fixing the title. No help. Nor is there any mention of mod action in the thread.

I just ran a test here in ATMB: Post a new thread & immediately try to edit the OP to tweak the title. The UI doesn’t afford an opportunity to modify the title. So that’s not what happened.
This is a curiosity, not a complaint.

Any ideas?

My WAG is that the characters you enter into the Title box are copied as the thread title when you post. That goes off into a separate entry in the database that is not editable by the user. However, the characters in the thread title box still are; they don’t get copied over because that happens only once.

I’m putting “This is editabekl” into the Title box. If you don’t see that, you’ll know it’s been edited.

You have to click on “Go Advanced” in the edit box to do so.
