A question for non-American SDers?

I was told by a Canadian once that I should never, ever on pain of death by hockeystick call a Canadian an “American” because (a) that term had rightly or wrongly come to mean someone from the US and (b) Canadians would be insulted at the suggestion they were from the US.

So now I’m conflicted.

No, in my case that usually is the reason.

I’ve never seriously heard a Canadian assert that they are an American because they’re from America. What is true is that we don’t tend to use the name “America,” instead calling it the US, the USA, the United States, or the States.

I guess the only time (for me) that it does get frustrating is when there is a dicussion about - as an example- the ten greatest sportsmen/ women- and only American sports people in American sports are included. I understand it, but it is a little annoying.

I just recently figured out the whining/whinging thing. (learned it here, of course.) I thought it was just one of those cool alternate spellings.

I think the large non-US posting base is one of the most valuable attributes of this board. I love reading the entire English-speaking-world perspective. And if I ever get too US-centric, I apologize.

Yeah, that’s why I keep saying “in Spain” or “in Costa Rica” or whatever when the specific location is relevant. After all, I’m a Spaniard and right now I’m in Spain, but that’s an abnormal situation for me. If I’m changing planes in Frankfurt and posting from the airport, how relevant to the effect of gamma rays on daisies would that “Frankfurt” be?

In Spanish, the subject of a sentence is often “elidido”: since the verbal form indicates the person and number, there’s no need for a pronoun, so we just use the verb. In this forum, the location of the majority of posters (not of the servers) means that there is no need to state your location if you’re part of that majority, unless you’re asking a question where location needs to be more specific. I’m not offended by the assumption that we’ll understand you’re speaking about the USA any more than I’m offended when my fellow 'net players assume that new players are male; I do take offense when some moron insist there’s no chicks in the internet but hey, their loss :stuck_out_tongue: Can’t remember anybody here saying there’s no foreigners in the Dope

I resent it so much that I call upon the Almighty Creator to smite the Great Satan and scatter its children to the four winds.

Too much?

A bit.
