A question of literacy

I found this article in the paper (the Globe & Mail) today, and was alternately amazed and horrified. It comments on the tests given to Grade 3 students in Alberta and in Ontario - the contrast is interesting, to say the least.

Which province would you like your kids going to school in?

I spent my first 16 years in Calgary Alberta. The entire class read ‘The Hobbit’ when I was in grade 3. I remember fairly high standards for reading and writing. It looks like some things have changed a lot since I was in 3rd grade at Falcon Ridge Elm. and Ralph Klein was in his first term as Mayor.
