I took this picture, this morning, with my cell phone. This is part of Ausable Chasm. I think that building in the background is, possibly, a hydro-power building but don’t quote me on that.
That gray stuff behind the cool rainbow is the side of the chasm, covered in ice.
You should have been there. It was beautiful. When I looked at the chasm from the main bridge, I saw a massive waterfall with huge amounts of spray just floating back up. Unfortunately, I didn’t think to take a picture of that view. Honestly, I didn’t think my cell phone could take pictures like this.
This is truly mundane and pointless but I had to share this awesome picture.
Do you know what the purpose of the building is? It’s unusual enough to make it interesting looking.
That is a beautiful shot though. I’m surprised to see how much snow you’ve still got on the ground although, judging by the flow, the melt’s already well underway.
I’m going to see if I can find out what it is. I’ve actually been wondering since I was a kid and I first saw the chasm. But, I had never really been motivated enough to find out.
We have a lot of snow because we’re pretty far north in NY. I’m about 20-30 minutes from the Canadian border and about 45-60 minutes from Montreal (depending on who’s driving). The weather here is pretty screwy. When you leave the Champlain Valley and head into the mountains, you can quite literally drive from one town with perfect weather, across the town line and into snow, rain, sleet - you get the point.
My last GF had never seen a rainbow in her life. We were coming out of a rainy ren faire just as the sky cleared up, and there one was, big and beautiful, stretching from horizon to horizon. It was pretty cool being there for her first time.
Very beautiful! I love rainbows too. A few weeks ago there was a gorgeous full-arch double rainbow here, just as we were leaving work. Like a nice treat, to send us home with!
I once took a picture of a full double rainbow. It stretched clear across the sky, and they both had all the colors. It was awesome. Unfortunately, the picture didn’t come out too good.
The first time I saw it, I was terrified. I was only 8 and had never even imagined anything like it could exist. Even today, when I was walking over the route 9 bridge, I got this pleasant dizzy feeling just from looking at the falls.
Oh, and this is actually the back side of the Rainbow Falls portion of the chasm. I didn’t find that out until today.
And, I still have no clue what that building is. There’s another one, in between where I took this picture and the big bridge but the other one is actually down IN the chasm.
Beautiful picture, congodwarf…and it brought me right back home again! I knew there was one other Plattsburgher on the boards (that picture + the travel times you give put you in the P’burg/Keeseville area), but odds were against there being three of us.
Now I’m all inspired…maybe I should try to set up a PlattsDope next time I’m in town, which should be in a couple months. I’ll check around and see if any of our Quebecois/New Yorker contingent would be up for such a thing.
It could be either that building or the one IN the chasm. I’m gonna go back this weekend and take some more pictures, with an actual camera.
I was still living in MA when those floods of '96 happened. In a way, I’m kind of glad I wasn’t here for that. I’m surprised though that my grandfather never told me about it. I’m also wondering if the earthquake about 5 or 6 years ago changed the chasm at all. As I recall, that earthquake was centered on the Keeseville area.
Ya know, I detest New York. I don’t particularly like living up here in Redneckville. But, we have Lake Champlain, High Peaks, Ausable Chasm, Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, huge amounts of other rivers and lakes, and one college that looks like the Overlook Hotel. Oh, and a lake monster. I guess every area has it’s assets. I never get tired of just driving around and seeing the sights. I have put 3000 miles on my new car. Since Valentine’s Day.
If you want to get all technical, I’m actually a Masshole. I’ve only lived here for a year. But, my mom is from here and I still have family here so I guess that counts for something.
If you want to get even more technical, according to my coworkers, I’m a Wiggler. I refuse to accept that. Just because I live here, does not mean I actually BELONG here. There’s a whole Wiggler mentality that I totally DON’T have.
You said there were three of us. Who’s the third? I think a PlattsDope would be a great idea. I’m almost positive we have some Vermont Dopers right across the lake too.
Ha! Wiggletown’s good people and good fishing, and a lot of the stuff that gets blamed on it actually comes out of Peru. The third P’burg Doper was clayton_e, but I haven’t seen him around in a while.
As soon as I figure out when I’ll be headed up, I’ll post a thread to see what day would be good for people.
