A really stupid House of Sand And Fog question - [Open Spoilers!]

OK, I know the movie isn’t quite recent, but I only saw it for the first time the other day. All in all, I think Ben Kingsley’s acting, especially after Esmail’s shooting (that hospital prayer moved me to some serious tears), elevated what would otherwise have been a fairly dreary and slow moving movie into excellent viewing.

Anyway, there was one scene that just had me scratching my head slightly. Kathy and Les are sitting in the restaurant, and Kathy sips her first glass of wine since going sober. The camera then cuts to below the table, where she slips her injured foot of her sandal; cut to the next scene.

I’m just slightly baffled as to why the “slip the foot out of the shoe” bit was there at all. Did it serve some sort of symbolic importance that I missed out on? Maybe a deleted scene that was supposed to follow immediately after? It just seemed so deliberate, yet so out of place…

Anyone have any insight?

The movie was full of clumsy, emptily “significant” moments like that. “House of Hamhanded Metaphors” would have been a better title I think.
